Suddenly my Anxiety and depression has come back after coming off Citalopram and changing meds

Hi all I am a male in my early 30s, and have had Anxiety and depression for 12 years. I was taking Citalopram 20mg for 4 years and before that Fluoxitene 20mg. Before xmas my anxiety and depression got bad where i was on the brink of suicide. However I never went ahead with such a thought, so my doctor upped my dosage of Citalopram to 30mg and it never worked. In January I changed over to Sertraline the gp starting me on 50mg. And within a few days I felt better and the Anxiety had lifted as did the depression. However two weeks later well the last few days to be precise I have had some Anxiety come back and depression, though not as bad as it was. I came off the Citalopram straight away and the gp put me staright on Sertraline. Could the Citalopram now be withdrawing from my body. thanks all

    Hi James

Did you recover on the Citalopram 20mg that you took for 4 years?

Changing meds is always difficult and though when I came off Cit I weaned off over a year but I'm not sure how it works transferring from one to another.  You could well have some withdrawal symptoms from Citalopram and of course, initial start up side effects from Sertraline.  There will always be some sort of anxiety swapping over, but it should ease.

I'll private message you a link which might help.

Hi yes they made me feel a lot better until december last year, then I had a bad belt of Anxiety, bad thoughts etc. So I rang the gp and he changed mwe to Sertraline in late January. The anxiety and bad thoughts dissapeared and certainly got better, but suddenly the last 5 days i have been getting Anxiety again and not being able to sleep properly. I think it could be withdrawl from the Citalopram rather than the Sertroline.

Was there a stressful event of any sorts just before getting anxiety again on the Citalopram?  Just wondered as its usually something like that that crops up.

When you start a new meds you will be up and down too - I suspect thats what may be happening with the Sertraline mixed with the Citalopram.  Given time I'm sure it will settle down.

That's interesting, tell me did the Sertraline help you in the first couple of weeks, and then did you suddenly get withdrawl symptoms from the Cit

Not that i noticed i just felt improvements here and there from 3 weeks in i could tell which was sert se and wat was cit withdrawal and tbh i didnt think to much abt it i just focused on getting to the 4-6 weeks to see if i felt any improvement dont worry abt it all of the wondering adds to the anxiety and ruminating thoughts
