Sunday Day 4 post op bilateral bunionectomy

Phew managed to get through the last few days & today the pain has subsided tremendously. Iv decided to stop codeine & stick with paracetamol & ibuprofen - keeping my legs elevated high for most of the day & using ice has been the best way in controlling my feet from swelling & helped with the pain. I have managed to sleep well but have kept the surgical shoes on in bed giving me peace of mind that  my feet are protected whilst I move around the bed.  Iv come to terms with all this sitting around - by just thinking it is a short  time in my life & hopefully I will benefit for the rest of my life with healthy pain free feet.  Good luck to all other healers x

Karen. It get's better everyday. Patience, ice and elevation is the answer. PIE!!!! Glad to hear you stopped pain meds. Getting a good nights rest, eating well is a big key to healing properly. Keeping a positive thought process is also a key element. Good luck. Easy Does it!!

Thanks Bob! I feel I am doing all the right things in order to heal well., I enjoy reading other's  experiences & tips on here - thank goodness for iPads technology helping us all to connect & support. It would be one lonely chair otherwise haha!! Really appreciate your kind words x

Good to know you are out there Karen and that you are at a similar stage to me. Yes, day 5 for me and I have settled into a bit of a routine. I am determined to be a good girl and to give my feet the best chance of healing so this means at the moment I only put them down for 5 mins in any hour. Actually they start to hurt after that length of time anyway so it is like a little warning - get back into the horizontal!  I have a 'work station' either upstairs ( sitting on the bed) or downstairs on the settee. At hand I have my current novel ( ' I am Pilgrim' - can highly recommend!), a bottle of water, pills (paracetamol ) my phone, and my iPad - which, before the op I used to charge once a week and now it needs it once a day! So another 5 weeks of this lazy life! Frustrating I know but I have high hopes of it being worth it in the end!  I am also a Radio 2 and Radio4 fan so will intro that into me cosy couch! There are some good dramas on Radio 4 extra so they can be factored in too, then of course there is the TV........I have recorded lots of 'must watch sometime' onto our hard drive so fun to be had there!

i haven't had any swelling Karen, well, none that I can see or feel in these big bandages so haven't used any ice. Also I don't wear my protective footwear in bed as my feet ache in them after a while. Are you in the UK or US?

Is there anyone else out there who is at a similar stage of recovery?

Hi jinny! Nice to hear from you. Your station sounds like mine. Once I'm downstairs I stay for the day. I have a reclining chair with loads of cushions for my feet, phone, ipad (yes lots of charging needed) lap top, kindle, remote plus medication & water. I am also a radio 2 fan but have been watching tv rubbish. I might give radio 4 a try.  I'm 51 & live in Yorkshire. It is a lazy life but was good to sit through the whole of Saturday morning kitchen yesterday when usually I would feel guilty & only catch bits whilst doing house jobs. It's good that you have no swelling - I don't think I was elevating my feet high enough they are now improving - ice has been my best companion. Keep in touch karen x

I'm in the US (Kaiser Permanente if that means anything to anyone) - preparing for a bunion surgery on my right foot on August 1st, and they recommend that I not use anything that is an anti-inflammatory, plus anything that is aspirin-based (like ibuprofen) for two weeks prior and two weeks following a surgery.  Something about bleeding.  Have you been advised anything about that?

I was not advised to not take aspirin based medication. But I can understand the reason as aspirin thins the blood & you could bleed more, so perhaps it is best to take your own surgeons advice. Good luck I will still be off work then & sitting around so keep in touch x
