ITS SIX WEEKS SINCE I GOT MY NEW HIP ON RIGHT NEED OTHER ONE DOING AS WELL, I WAS SURPRISED TO FIND OUT THAT MY SECOND ONE IS GOING TO BE DONE ON THE 18th FEBRUARY! I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT 29th JANUARY FOR MY CHECK UP ON RIGHT HIP. I HAD A FEW PROBLEMS WITH LEAKAGE FROM THE WOUND SO HAD TO HAVE A DRAIN FITTED WHICH WAS RATHER CUMBERSOME! I SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF SWELLING IN BOTH MY LEGS, THEY ACHE QUITE A LOT AT TIMES, OF COURSE I WILL MENTION THIS WHEN I SEE MY SPECIALIST ON 29th......I DONT SLEEP WELL ON MY BACK AND FIND IT VERY UNCOMFORTABLE, SO MUCH SO I CANT SLEEP, I AN PERMANENTLY TIRED AND STRUGGLE TO DO MY EXERCISES ETC THE FACT I AM HAVING MORE SURGERY IS VERY DAUNTING DUE TO MY SLOW RECOVERY WITH THE RIGHT HIP. I HAVE A DROPPED FOOT FROM NERVE DAMAGE AFTER HAVING THREE LOTS OF SURGERY ON MY BACK. ITS VITAL I WEAR AN ANKLE SUPPORT! IT GOT LOST IN THE HOSPITAL AND I BELIEVE THE WOUND LEAKAGE WAS CAUSED BECAUSE OF HAVING TO PUT TOO MUCH WEIGHT ON MY NEW HIP! I AM A BIT RELUCTANT ON HAVING MY LEFT HIP DONE FEELING THE WAY I DO NOW BUT AT THE SAME TIME I WOULD LIKE TO GET IT OVER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.....HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THEIR TWO HIPS CLOSE TOGETHER? ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED THANKS CYNDEY

Good morning Cyndey wow that is a very quick date! I had my first one 4 weeks ago and it scares me to think about having the second so soon. I was told that the earliest I could have my second operation was 3 months after the first (which scares me)
Like you I think the sooner the better then we can get our lives back.

Wound leakage is not uncommon, I had a drain for my first THR operation, but none for the two since.
Ice and elevation of the affected limb are your friends for swelling.
We all know how hard sleeping on your back is, I went through it 3 times, plus a spell in hospital on my back 24 hours/day and not allowed to get out of bed ...... that was awful. I used my iPod with soothing music to help me get off to sleep, and found that a harder mattress on our spare bed with plenty of pillows (I had a V shaped on that was good) was more comfortable. Get sleep whenever you can, even short naps throughout the day.

Hi Cyndey,
A lot of people have two hips done together so it is not uncommon, Eamonn Holmes had two as he was scared of having the op like a lot of us. Personally, I would have found two close together difficult but other people cope well and prefer it.

HI JEN
THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS, I CAN RECALL EAMMON HOLMES HAVING BOTH DONE TOGETHER NOW YOU MENTION IT. I AM SURE ITS GOT ITS ADVANTAGES GETTING THEM BOTH OVER TOGETHER! ALTHOUGH A BIT DAUNTING! AT LEAST I CAN THINK OF MY SELF BEING RECOVERED BY THE SPRING AND HAVING THE PLEASURE OF BEING PAIN FREE TO TAKE SOME NICE WALKS CHEERS AND THANKS AGAIN

Hi Cyndy - sounds like you've been through the ringer! I'm so sorry. All doctors do things differently, but the nurse at rehab and now at home, check my wound to make sure it is dry. My understanding is that is that if there is leakage or swelling it could be an infection. Are you on a blood thinner? Don't mean to be an alarmist, I am NOT a doctor, but swelling could be indicative of a blood clot.
Why wait until the 29th to see your surgeon? I would want to see him immediately . . . and if your not up to it physically or emotionally, it's okay to postpone the second surgery. You want to go into it in a good frame of mind.
My best to you . . . keep us updated.
