Has anybody started swimming after their thr. I want to start swimming but don't know if they are restrictions on infections etc. Think swimming is one of the ideal ways to build up muscle strength again

I started going in the pool after my 6 weeks check. Doctor approved. Iv had to stop due to having another syrgery on shoulder and being in sling but once thats off my physio wants me to refer me to use the hospital hydropool. Being in the water is one of the best ways to build up muscles after thrs and you dont actually have to swim. You can just do your exercises in the pool and that will help 😊

I was told wait 6 weeks to reduce the risk the infection but I'd recommend confirming with the surgeon.

I started swimming as soon as I had the clips out.  My wound was clean and dry and the doc said I could go for it.  I'm a regular swimmer anyway so couldn't wait to get back in the pool.  The best exercise  you can do.  I'm 8 weeks post op and doing great.  I swim 5 times a week, front crawl of course.  I also do a few exercises my physio gave me to do in the pool.

I was told once scar is fully healed you can swim. I was also told never do breaststroke again ( the stroke I do )

I was told 6 weeks for swimming.

I do the breast stroke but I was doing the free style type kick presurgery.

I hope maybe at the 4 week mark I can start swimming and or do exercises in the pool.

I got clearence from my GP at about 24 days after surgery, then straight down to the heated pool.

I tread water with a noodle tucked under my arms, just like riding a bike, and approved by my physio some months later when I went in for a checkup, very impressed by my general strength, I put it down to modified swimming, and just exercising those legs and lower back with the treading water.

I also do my stretches while I am in the water, not until it hurts, but just until I feel the pull, is the way the in hospital physio put it.

Went in the pool at 6 weeks. Breast Stroke arms and kicking legs!  Also did exercises in the water and walking up and down. Lovely!

    Hi Eileen,

Sounds like you are healing up well,

?Like most people here, I was encouraged to do swimming after 6 weeks, but unlike some folk here I was told by my physio any stroke including breast, was fine - just as well cos that is my norm! I've been regularly swimming ever since, no problems.

?Advice does seem contradictory sometimes - find your own way forward as I'm sure you will!
