Swollen

Hi again all, I sure look forward to replying to a few of these one day.

So I was showing my wife my bandage  tonight, and she noticed how swollen i was under it. Has anyone experienced this ?

I am 12 days post surgery , Have not seen anything like this at all this far.

Now having said that, if there was a day I went over board with the walking and exercising, it was today. Im wondering if it has swelled up because of this, Im sure hoping so

Thanks so much

Is the swelling hot and red and angry looking, if so you need to see a Dr ASAP.

?Other than the surgery cut site, it will still be red and a little sore looking for weeks yet, but it does go white after some time, about a year for mine if I remember correctly.

?Now over doing it UMMMMMM, author of your own demise I'm afraid, you must just do a little more every day and not push too hard, YES I know its hard to do that, or even go for a short walk twice a day rather than try to do it all in one big bite, best bit of advice I got from physio, was until you start to feel the pull, and then stop take a break and come back and try again for a little more next time.

Sadly Rick I am 12 weeks post op and still have significant swelling and tenderness around the scar area. I also bruise really easily. Some people have virtually none. Think it depends from person to person sadly .

Hopefully yours will go down soon. Mine was much easier after the staples and dressing were removed at 2 weeks .

Yes. Im 6 weeks post op and still swollen and tender at op site. If I over do it...even more so.

Ice, ice and more ice I was told.

Hi I am 2 weeks today its my second in 3 months had dressing off yesterday wound site healing well but still swollen and a bit of bruising left, do find my foot swells up and down a bit depending on what I have been doing it helps if you elevate for a couple of periods in the day bit of general swelling sounds quite normal at this early stage we all underestimate what has gone on under that scar ! As someone else said if the swelling is is red and or hot and painful you must seek medical help or if any other part of you leg swells there is still a risk of DVT but you sound to be coming on just fine it gets better fairly quickly keep moving but dont overdo it I know how frustrating it is to want to get back to normal quickly .

      Hi, m05,

How do you cope having a second op only 3 months after first, you are only just coming out of precauctions and according to doctor last Wednesday he said be extra careful for 6 months. At 6 weeks post op I am tired of precautions especially lying on back, I could not imaging extending them further, I have already decided I will not go through it again. I am really curious as to how you manage.

Hi I was originally considering having both done together as both were bone on bone and very painful but was advised by surgeon not to. I really had no options my first settled well but I still had bad pain from the left so life was very restricted I was more than keen to get left done asap to be honest the pain and restrictions were just as bad still the trauma of the op and recovery to be honest were nothing compared to the prospect of living indefinitely in pain and not even being able to walk 100yard comfortably . I am 2 weeks out of the 2nd now and feel great about it just starting to appreciate no bone on bone pain yes there are restrictions and discomfort but at least these should now get better I am no superman but I just resigned myself to it and kept a positive attitude and projected ahead to a better life . I have set acheivable goals and tried not to get low about the weight increase and drop in fitness that can all be sorted .

    Rick,

I should not worry about the swelling it is going to happen, you have had a very deep cut there. I felt like I was sitting on a rolled up towel sometimes, it will also feel tender and probably hurt at times, it all comes and goes as it goes through various stages of healing.

Jen....that is the BEST description of how that feels!! 😊

Hi Rick. Swelling will be when you overdo it. Body is telling you to calm down! I overdid it two weeks after the op and my normal looking leg ballooned into an elephants one. Took a week to go. No swelling now but you must try to do things gradually. It’s frustrating but you have to be patient. Vanessa

    Hi Rick,

When I was about 10-12 days post op, I developed a new, significant swelling. I was worried about infection so went to my surgeon. Turned out I’d developed a subdural hematoma. The surgeon drained it (painless) and advised me to slow down on the exercising. I’m now 13 weeks out and it has not returned. Good luck!

Hi Rick I am six months out and my hip is swollen the size of a small volleyball.  The doctor told me it's a condition called heterotrophic ossification.  The worst part is that they can't do anything.  If they operate it my get worse.  It's bone tissue that forms in the soft tissue.  Is there anyone who has the same problem or has any more information?
