Swollen Tonsils For 3 Weeks With Virus - Anyone Else? I'm Going Mad!

Posted , 5 users are following.

Apparently I have a virus that is causing my tonsils to be inflamed for 3 weeks.

I've been test for strep and mono, and it's not those. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

They're not sore or causing me any trouble swallowing, but I am getting some dry mouth, bad breath and the odd nasty little tonsil stone too.

Any help greatly appreciated! I'm going mad.

Quick update for today: Had dry mouth again this morning, almost reached for my spray but then decided to try and let it come back naturally. Seems fine now.

No sweats last night, but the acid/heartburn was there again! Argh. I think it was what I ate, will see what happens tonight.

I'm also getting some strange random tingles all over my body too, not itches as such, but tingles. Hopefully it's nothing! I read about someone else having them yesterday, and my mind seems to have picked up on that and decided I should have them too I think.

Took an Ativan, and it's making me a little weak/dizzy/drowsy again, so will ask the doctor if there are any other options next week.

Also found a lymph node in my groin area which is playing on my mind, but it is soft/squishy, movable and painless so it's probably just my anxiety here too.

That's all for now, will keep the thread updated when I can.

    Friday update:

Woke up and had clearly been sweating again, felt a bit wet and also cold! Haven't warmed up yet either. So I still feel like I'm getting chills.

Dry mouth didn't seem to be there this morning, so that's great!

But I'm still getting myriad other symptoms, I seem to be needing to pee a lot, my skin is easily indenting. (After telling someone yesterday not to worry about sock marks, I'm now noticing them myself).

Tingles and various other things seem to be happening too.

Can't wait to see the doctor, as strange as that sounds!

      Hi,

I have marks left on my skin too. As if I'm dehydrated, maybe I am, because my temp is higher than normal.

I'm still sick, coughing ans stuffy nose. Hope this goes away soon.

I'm more worried about the lymph nodes that are always swollen. I have no idea if they ever go down.

I think I'll need another ultrasound.

And I cannot eat cold or hot food. I wish I could eat ice cream again. I can't even look at icy products without throat pain.

hope you have a nice weekend.

      Hello! smile

Yeah it seems quite common, probably another anxiety related symptom. I doubt I'm dehydrated, been drinking plenty. :-) Although I guess the night sweats/frequent peeing could be doing it though. (Peeing more normally today I think).

That sucks. I've not had any more flu like symptoms other than some phlegm (no brown lately which I'm thinking is a positive), a little sneeze here or there etc. All normal stuff.

Lymph nodes are getting on my nerves too! But they don't seem to be malignant in nature. They're all movable and squishy, most also hurt if I touch them. I have to remind myself my bloods were fine too, they showed no signs of anything serious.

I've never had one of those! Hopefully you can get one arranged and see what they find out. I'm not sure what other tests I should get done, but I might mention to the doctor about if it might be a good idea to do an MRI/CT and or any other tests. I also want to see an ENT about the tonsils if possible.

What are you eating? Your throat must be super sore if you can't stand the extremes? I've had no trouble with food, except I seem to be getting flatulent, burping, and that heartburn a couple times. My appetite is fine.

You too! I'll probably have to drop by and leave a couple posts just to update what's going on.

P.S. I'm also thinking about asking about Medicinal Cannabis, so that could be interesting. The Ativan works for the most part, but it seems to also be contributing to my symptoms I think.

I also stumbled on this thread on a forum that people reading this may find interesting if the mods will allow it:

    http://www.nomorepanic.co.uk/showthread.php?t=197713

It talks about how lymph nodes can be anywhere up to 1-2cm in size and still not be an issue among other things. I've read and re-read that a few times now in order to try and keep my lymphobia under control. (Not sure if that's a real thing, but there you go!)

Quick update. My current symptoms are:

    Dry mouth (mostly morning)

Tonsils still looking red/swollen (both sides),

I can feel nodes in all kinds of places (small, squishy and movable)

    Mood swings

    Chills (hot flashes sometimes too)

    Nausea

Constipation (I think it might be caused by Ativan)

    Minor occasional tinnitus

Feeling weak/shaky (Could also be the Ativan's fault?)

Anxious (Well, I was diagnosed with anxiety!)

My doctor prescribed me with Sandoz Momesetone (sp?) for post nasal drip, and Ativan (0.5mg) for the anxiety. So some of my current symptoms could be being caused by those 2 meds. I've not taken either of them today, because I want to figure out what the cause is. Is it me or the meds? (Might take a while to find out I guess).

Doctors is Wednesday, so hopefully I can get my mind put to rest then. biggrin

I wonder how Christine is doing?

Freaking out a bit the past few days.

    * still getting night sweats

    * feel weak

    * lost a little bit of weight

    * trembling

    * not talking properly

    * skin indenting easily

    * feeling nodes in groin and neck

    * tonsils still inflamed and breath terrible along with dry mouth

    Could this all be anxiety?

Hi, sorry for late reply, I have been really bad recently.

Sorry to hear you have more symptoms. Do you measure temp?

the strange thing about me is that when I or doctors measure my temp from right ear it's always higher than the left one. And the pain is mainly right sided.

I'm still sick. My tonsils are finally so swollen I can't swallow my saliva. I had a yogurt 2 days ago after being away from dairy. Made an excuse and now I have to take antibiotics I guess.

I have problems with weight too as I don't eat bread or dairy.

And on top of all I'm too tired and I'm only 30.

Thinking about visiting my doctor again.

No problem! It sucks that you've been bad recently. sad

I did measure it at 36c before, but I don't want to test it again, just in case it sets me off on another panic attack/anxiety bout. (I'm still not convinced that's all it is either).

That's very interesting! I have no idea what my temp readings have been at the various doctors visits I've made, but as I'm typing this I feel like I might have a fever again. I seem to either feel freezing cold or too hot, and hardly ever "normal" lately.

That's terrible! Mine are still pretty much the same size, but the dry mouth and all the other symptoms (especially the night sweats) still has me thinking it's something more serious.

I've been trying to avoid bread too! Trying to get on the Keto diet, but haven't quite managed it yet. Need to start taking it seriously I think.

I'm tired too! Do you feel weak also? I hate that feeling, and it just adds to the anxiety.

I'm only a year older. biggrin

My doctors visit is in a couple hours now, so hopefully she can help me get to the bottom of this. Hope you can get an appointment too and we can both figure out what the hell is going on with us!

P.S. If you don't mind me asking, are you east coast, west coast or somewhere in the middle? I'm in the Maritimes. Just curious if we're close or not, might have caught the same thing.

    I have an update.

My blood has been tested for white/red count, platelets, kidney function, liver function, thyroid, and various other nutrients like b12 and potassium, and all of those are 100% fine. So It seems highly unlikely to be anything serious.

This is on top of knowing I haven't got Flu, Mono, or Strep. So a virus seems like the most likely candidate. Plus anxiety of course.

I now also have a referral to see a neurologist and an ENT, so hopefully those appointments go well, and I can finally put this horrible episode behind me. biggrin

      Hi,

I’m way worse today, coildn’t sleep at night beacuse of the cough

The weakness is the worst! You know I noticed I was fever free at the weeekend because I slept for 10+ hours and plus I took a nap. So if I sleep the usual 8 hours it’s not enough for me. So strange.

I am in the middle of Canada. I think we have lots of sick people here in the country. Probably because we don’t get enough vit D?

I had about 3 blood tests durinf this year. Mostly they were fine. But my red blood cell count and hemoglobin steadily decreases. For years whenever I had blood test, My hemoglobin was at 138 straight. Now during this year it went down to 133, then 128, then 126. I wonder if it went down now either and what it means?  I wat beef more thn anything else so that’s not the case.

I know doctors will say it’s within the normal range. I feel like something is wrong especially that i get so many bruises on my skin!

I’ll let you know once I see any doctor or do tests.

      Take care for now

      That's terrible :-(

Yeah it really sucks, my legs feel like jelly! I've not been sleeping too well either, which probably isn't helping at all! I need to try and get more/longer sleep for sure. I take melatonin, but it seems to wear off at around 5am or so, and I'm wide awake after that.

Probably! But I supplement with Vit D every day, 1000-3000 iu and still seem to be getting beaten down by whatever the hell this is. Maybe supplements don't work? Who knows.... biggrin

I'm not sure what my readings were exactly or how to interpret your's. Mine are all perfectly fine according to all the doctors. (At the hospital and my family doc too). She doesn't seem that concerned by the long list of symptoms I handed her earlier either. eek

I don't really get bruises, I am noticing skin indents more lately, but that was on the symptom list too and she didn't seem to be worried about that at all.

For sure! Keep me posted, I'd love to know how you're getting on. cheesygrin I just need to wait to hear from the ENT and Neuro to get them appointments made, hopefully they're not too long of a wait.

Crossing my fingers for both of us. Hopefully I won't have to bump this thread with any more weird and wonderful symptoms before then either. lol

Just posting an update. Feeling a bit better today for the first time in weeks.

Still having symptoms, but nowhere as bad as they have been. My mood seems a lot better too.

Woke up ever so slightly sticky, felt a little weak and off balance too, but have had moments today where I felt normal. Hopefully this means whatever was attacking me and/or the anxiety is going away.

Still not heard about my ENT or Neurologist appointment yet, but we'll see what happens. I'm not going to worry about how long I might have to wait, because that will just fuel the anxiety monster. cheesygrin

      Hi,

This week hs been hellish for me. Can't fall asleep, this cough is killing me. I noticed I don't fight viruses at all. I need medicine as my lymph nodes are not doing their job.

Went to see my doctor. Told her about the cough and asked her about the lymph node that bothers me in the right side. She didn't even bother to look. She says it's my lymph node swollen and shook her shoulders like I don't know what it means.

I was determined to tell my doctor that I'm really weak and I have no diagnosis. But couldn't...because she thinks I have seen lots of doctors and she has nothing to do with me any more.

Thinking about giving up my diet. I got really think and weak during these months without gluten, dairy.

The anxiety is the worst enemy right now for us.

      have a nice weekend

      Hello there!

That sounds terrible. sad I was doing okay the other day, but had a minor relapse yesterday. Still getting various symptoms too.

I've had multiple doctors check my nodes and they all think they're fine, but I can feel them everywhere. I think us non-doctors panic about nodes thinking something's up, but the doctors don't seem to worry about them. I wish they either would, or would give some kind of re-assurance as to what constitutes a "swollen" node. I can feel about 15+ of them! All small and squishy though, so I guess I am overly concerning myself.

I feel weak too probably the worst symptom, was a lot better Friday, but weak again yesterday. I don't think I had night sweats last night though so hopefully that continues. They freak me out too!

I'm not sure what diet to do either! I think I should probably try to bulk up too, but I dunno what's wrong with me so it's a little hard to figure it out. lol

Yes the anxiety really isn't helping! I've not taken Ativan for about a week now though, so hopefully I don't need it. Still getting the anxiety symptoms though.

You too! I'm going to phone the ENT tomorrow and make sure they got my referral, really want that appointment. If the ENT comes back all clear I think I can finally put this episode behind me.

my lymph nodes are pretty big I think, most of them probably 0.5cm, But I have couple of them that are 1cm in diameter. I'm worried as I get also bruises and low grade fever and the most importantly the fatigue. I find it hard to even do 1 chore per day. For example if I cook I get so tired, my feet start shaking, I become dizzy and nauseous.

We have lots of common symptoms but I think there so many diseases with the same symptoms. Yours sounds more like mono though.

    • Posted

I've copied here one of the forum members post about the marks on the skin and it is true with mono, so you have another sign of monosmile it's good or bad, I think I'd love to have mono haha

"Absolutely. I have had shingles and cold sores during mono. I have also had other strange skin reactions such as light rosacea (went away eventually) and skin being extremely sensitive to the slightest touch or pressure, everything would leave a mark (dermatographic urticaria)."

I read somewhere that from BB size up to 2CM can be "normal". Doesn't really help when I can feel them everywhere though. I've got one that's probably over 1CM in size, but that's in my groin area and I've been touching it which has probably made it swell. rolleyes It seems to come and go too.

That totally sucks, I feel weak mostly, nausea I've not had for quite a while now! So hopefully whatever was attacking me is going, I've said that before though so fingers crossed.

My biggest concern is oral C, if my bloods are fine it can't be Leukemia or Lymphoma. But I really need that ENT appointment to put my mind at rest. Might visit a dentist if possible because they could check for that too. cheesygrin

Even if it isn't oral c, I think I want my tonsils out because they've been inflamed for years. eek

Wow, that could be another Mono symptom then!

I do wonder if that test came back with a false negative, but maybe there are "mono-mimicks" out there too.

I can't remember if I posted this before or not, but I had something very similar 8 years ago. That time though I was worried about Colon c, because I had all kinds of abdominal symptoms, blood when wiping (sorry!) but had most of these symptoms too, like chills, fatigue, etc. etc. I don't remember having night sweats back then though, but I did have some kind of ear trouble too which ended up with my right ear bleeding. Haven't got that this time.

Pre-"mono" I was getting a lot of wax out of my left ear, so maybe it could be linked to my ear(s) again too.

Hopefully we can get some answers soon! Did you get your ENT appointment too? biggrin

That's my fear too. Oral C is the worst of all cancers. And they say doctors miss it very often.

I've had my tonsils out and now they have grown back in my throat. It's awful. I wish I never did it. Instead of the palatine tonsils my lingual tonsils take all the infection on them. And it's uncomfortable and dangerous because they are deeper in the throat.

I'd advise get 2 or even 3 opinions before having them removed.

Do you have any autoimmune stuff? I have never been healthy person but I have never been this sick either haha

I had burning mouth and throat thing years ago. It lasted for a year. I went through hell then. I would wake up in the middle of the night and cry because the acid literally ate my throat. My stomach would hurt when I was eating. Even walking hurt my stomach. I would stop and grab my stomach in pain.

I always think what if I have lupus or Sjogren's. I have elevated blood markers for Sjogren's....

I don't know if it's the worst or not, but it's my biggest fear because of my lifestyle choices. redface

Oh wow! Okay that certainly gives me some perspective. Maybe a last resort then?

It drives me mad that they've always been inflamed. Literally, they've never been in their little crypts at all as far as I remember. Used to get strep all the time as a kid, and they never seemed to go down. Ironically they now look smaller to me than they have in the past. But they look a lot more fiercer than normal right now. eek

I've noticed one on the right seems to have a papiloma on it too, which is just adding to my anxiety over them. One of them looks a slightly different shape to the other one too, but they're both inflamed so that could be a good sign perhaps. (I hope!)

    • Posted

I'm not sure about autoimmune stuff, never been checked for that as far as I know... Have you? Are there any tests you could suggest if so? biggrin

I used to be sick what seemed like all the time as a kid, colds, flu, strep, stomach issues, ear trouble, etc. Since I moved here though I'm very rarely ill. So when I do get sick I seem to jump to the conclusion that the drinking/smoking has caught up to me and I'm stage IV something. lol

(Typing that out seems to have helped me realize I how dumb I'm probably being right now haha!)

I sometimes have stomach problems, but usually that's what I've been eating I think. What kinds of things do you usually go through? Cold/flu stuff? Or other things?

    • Posted

For autoimmune diseases they do ANA blood test which shows if you have any markers for rehmatoid arthritis or lupus, sjogren.

The C phobia is everywhere now. So many people get scared because of the fear mongering articles.

And keep in mind males are more prone oral C than females. You’re a female, right?

I would get sick when I had my tonsils. But after tonsils I rarely got sick. It was an illusion though. In reality my body doesn’t fight viruses.

On friday my doctor did a strep test. I wonder if the test covers all strep groups.

    • Posted

Okay might have to have one of those then! Going to try calling the ENT today to double check they got my referral.

Yes it is! I wonder if seeing various articles about drinking, smoking, and oral C has convinced me I have it, set off a panic attack and given me terrible anxiety with physical symptoms. I need to see this ENT guy though to be 100% sure.

I'm a male. So yeah I'm extra worried. sad

Hmm that's interesting! I know a lot of people who say you should keep your tonsils if possible and that the operation isn't pleasant/recovery is bad etc. But I don't know yet.

I would think/hope so! It probably wouldn't be worth doing otherwise. cheesygrin

      Quick little update for today:

      * Didn't have dry mouth this morning

      * Don't think I had any night sweats, 2 days running now.

      * Still feel chills (hate that!)

      * Still feel weak/fatigued (might take a nap today if I can)

      * Still having phlegm in my throat, not convinced that's just post-nasal drip but I hope so!

Overall I feel like I might be getting better. Just want the ENT tests done and I can hopefully find out nothing's wrong with me.
