Tecnis Symfony Toric : awesome but ....where's the light ?

I did cataract both eyes 10 months ago (last July 2020)
IOL (Tecnis Symfony) One Toric, the other one not.
Everything is awesome, coming from high myopic eyes (-12)
But it's a bit like the brightness of the TV has dropped.
I always need a light to read, apart from a very light reading prescription (+1,00).
Is this thing about brightness and luminosity something common with IOLs ?

That sounds a bit unusual and unexpected. Most people coming from having catarcts to an IOL report a huge improvement in brightness, contrast, and colour. When it got my IOL it was almost like I had a new TV. We were at my son's place last night and he does have a newer LED type TV (ours is plasma) TV and I found it to be too bright and the colours were washed out with my IOL eye. I only have one done at this point.

Tecnis does not use blue light filtering while the lens I have (AcrySof) does blue light filtering. The blue light filter does cut the light level down a little and brings it back to simulate the natural lens. The Tecnis lenses actually transmit more light than the young natural lens. So something seems strange.

As for reading, dimmer light is a problem for everyone with an IOL, especially one that does not try to correct for near vision. The issue is that when the pupil opens up to let more light in the depth of focus is reduced. Near vision almost always improves with brighter light. In bight sunlight I can actually read to some degree with my monofocal IOL. In dim light, not a chance.

Thinking there shouldn't be a change 10 months later. only thing I can think of is in the beginning it is such a huge difference - everything seems so bright. Maybe you've become accustomed to new normal?Only other thing I can think of is the beginnings of pco (what is commonly known as 2nd cataract). Always beneficial to see your optometrist on a yearly basis. You can see if pco is starting to affect your vision during that exam

Has it been dim all along or did that develop over time? If it developed over time I wonder if it could be posterior capsular opacification?

yes it was from day one
with complete brightness i read every small print almost w/o correction
in shaded areas i cannot even read my digital watch without a backlight
maybe thats because I was highly miopic and you know that we see very well very near. I dont miss it a minute of that but its clearly very different , just the opposite of my old eyes

Yes, with -12 D eyes and your glasses off, your close vision would have been of Superman quality. I used to be in the -4 D range and taking my glasses off for up close was fantastic. As I aged my vision got better and I lost that ability, also along with the ability of my pupils to open up as the light got dimmer.
