Things to avoid if you are having Total Hip Replacement

Posted , 15 users are following.

Hi to all who are considering Total Hip Replacement

It is only fair to tell you that some people have had their operation cancelled at the last minute because they had been having other treatments which would clash with the procedure.

These include:

Steroid injections within 3 months before operation.

Not that I have done this but.You can also be cancled because of medications you are taking / using. So make sure at your pre op you tell them EVEREYTHING you are taking or using be it prescribed or not. Some of the meds I am on I have to stop taking at least 24 hours before any operations can take place. I only knew this through research. S resaerch your meds

Shirley. Here is the list I was given. Although steroids weren't mentioned !

Athletes Foot or similar fungal infection.

    Thrush

Bacterial infection in the mouth or

General tooth decay (absence of oral hygiene)

    Medication not previously mentioned.

    Herbal remedies including multi vits.

    Homeopathic medicine of any type.

It was explained to me that garlic is a blood thinner and there has been no research on how homeopathic treatment reacts with drug treatment.

    Hope this helps.

I was diagnosed with DVT a month before THR, so prescibed Warfarin. Six months on Warfarin before next pre op, to see if I can go back on waiting list.

I suffer from a intermittent atrial fribuation (PAF) this means from time to time my heart though structurally sound beats extremely fast this happened at my first pre op and although they were aware I had the condition and the pretty heavy meds I am in to control it ( including riveroxibane a blood thinner) once they were aware of just how fast it went during an episode ( which I am unaware of) they needed a full cardio repeat and arranged to take me in the day before I was able to take all my meds except the riveroxibane which had to be stopped 48 hours before surgery ( if you are on warfarin this will have to be stopped a week before). Because of the condition they could not risk a spinal block and I had to have a GA but my op did take place 6 months after the original date

I had to stop taking Nabumetone an anti inflamatory a week before my op date.  It thins the blood so I was told.

I had surgery cancelled because I'd been taking low dose aspirin. Need to stop it a week before surgery. Also fish oil, but they weren't so strict with that.

My surgeon said any ache or pain needs to be taken care of, hip replacement is an elective surgery and he doesn't want to deal with a sick patient.

Wow . I see HRT on list which I am on but my surgeon had no issues with it ! As with other things on thus site things differ from place to place , country to country and surgeon to surgeon

    Thanks again,

What this thread shows is that you need to stop and think well before your operation.

At least we have raised people's awareness.
