Hi, I have not been dx with any thyroid issue but just wondered if anyone has any knowledge/experience of this?
I'm 40yrs old and have had Type 1 diabetes for 10yrs. As many of you will know, Type 1 and Thyroid dysfunction is relatively common in conjunction with each other, and as part of my annual diabetic review I have a routine Thyroid test. No problems have ever been flagged up. My general diabetic control is good.
The other day when washing my hair, I noticed there seemed a lot more shedding than usual. I am aware of the condition Telogen Effluvium and a few times as a teen/young adult I had periods of heavy hair shedding. The last time I remember having it was after my diabetes diagnosis. It always righted itself and no other issues since then. But I would say there was at least 50% more hair loss than I would usually get when washing the the other day.
Then just yesterday, I went to pluck a few stray eyebrow hairs and I suddenly noticed how thin the outer edge of my right brow was. The left was totally normal but the outside of the right one looked incredibly thin. I was really stumped as I had not noticed this previously. I last tidied my brows about 3 weeks ago.
Looking online and Thyroid issues, esp hypothyroidism keeps popping up. One site even said thinning outer brows (or just one brow) is often a unique sign of thyroid dysfunction.
Does anybody know of this or had this experience? I have a review with the nurse practitioner at my GP surgery due this month so I wil mention it then, but also, what should I be asking for when it comes to thyroid tests, as often seem to hear that routine tests often failed to pick up imbalances?
Thank you.

This is very interesting! I was dx'd in November and am learning so much. I can't really add anything since I'm 67 and my eyebrows are mostly white and already were thin toward the end/ sides.
Menopause causes hair loss in strange places. I used to shave underarms daily and now it takes a month for there to be anything to shave. I get maybe 10 hairs on my leg. They moved to my chin. (Just Kidding, 3 did) Pubic hair changes color (I read most women have copper red hair there after menopause) and gets VERY thin.
Sarah, I'll bet most doctors don't know that thyroid and other health conditions can affect hair, nails, etc. In my humble opinion, I think many doctors stop reading and learning once they get into practice.
