hi, i have my op this tues and am very apprehensive. I'm 33 yrs and fit with no health problems. How long does it take to recover and get back to work. I have an office job and work on the phones. Some people say 6 weeks and others 10 weeks.

Any ideas?

Please dont be Lee I had mine 7weeks ago,of course every one is different,I had very little pain after 5 days and now walk around my flat with no crutches and one when I go out.Remember this is still a major op,be as prepared as you can be, have all the back up you can muster and please try and be positive, this will be the start of a new life for you,the time will go very quickly, just listen to your body listen to your consultant, follow all the advice and rest too, this is important and you will be finex

thanks Sylvia, 5 days inst long really before the pain decreases, i expected it to be weeks! i have 2month worth of food stacked, but have 3 children under 5yrs. My wife and family are very supportive. I've had perthes disease in my hip since i was 14yrs old so around 19yrs now. How do you get on sitting down in a chair for long periods of time. For example at work i sit down at the desk for 4hrs in the morning and same in the afternoon. I also work 30mins away from home, so i have a 30min drive. Unfortunatley no one is available to take me

HI Lee occupational health provided me with a special which has been really comfortable, dont forget when yoi come home first you will relish sitting down believe me and then as the days go by and you get more mobile with excersise you will use the chair for shorter periods. All the best

    Hi Lee

I was working on e mails from my I pad in hospital and back at my desk 7 days later.  Two crutches for first week, one for second and none for third. I am fortunate to work from my office at home but I would have done the same had I have worked in an office elsewhere although my partner would need to transport me.

If you are office bound whatever you do try and ensure you have some rest time to aid recovery

    Best wishes

      Hi Lee

Sitting at desk no problem but need to balance with rest etc and not too push yourself too hard

    Good advice from Sylvia.

    I. Had no pain what so ever after op.  If you have automatic car and new left hip I know people who were working in 4 weeks.

Listen to your body you will know what is good for you don't push too hard too soon but you are young and fit so that's on your side I am 63 female ( using my grandsons name)! I could  have been back at work if I needed  to in 5 weeks.

    good luck :0)

I had my THR on 5 Nov and will be returning to work on 22 Jan to an office job with quite a bit of walking thrown in.  The thing though is that as far as I am concerned, my job since my operation was to recuperate.  You need to exercise and provide challenges along the way.  Obviously the amount of pressure from your employer to return will have an impact, but you don't want to jeopardize your long term recovery either.  I have found that I need to walk around if I have been sitting for more than a couple of hours.  There is also the impact of the anesthetic on how your brain works - which is one of the reasons why you can't drive for 6 weeks.  The key thing will be how you recover, which is different for each one of us.  Hope it all goes well smile.

Hi Barhi. So you had 11 weeks or so then? How did you find your recovery so far? My company are not in a hurry to have me back as i have the lap top so i could do work from home if need be. Who decides how long you take off work, is it you or the consultant?

Hi Lee - I have been lucky and my recovery has gone very well.  I am now at 9 weeks and will return to work at 11 weeks.  I also have my work lap top, but was encouraged (by my boss) to concentrate on recovering properly, so haven't looked at it for a couple of weeks!

Who decides, well in my case it was my physio.  I told him my goals (walk 2k unaided and stand for 1hr) and he based his assessment on my progress.  According to him, I have always been ahead of the curve, maybe because I always push myself.

When I asked for another sick note at my six week check up, the consultant asked how long I wanted and I told him what the physio had said.  For me, this time looks about right.

I am now walking without any aids (expect when I walk my dogs on rough ground).  The confidence is slowly returning, but I can't yet move fast enough to be totally normal.  For most of us, we have a fear of dislocation, partially caused by reading forums like this!

Other than that, the key thing is not being able to bend to the ground.  I am seriously looking forward to the day when I can tie my own shoe laces.

Looking forward to hearing how you get on smile

One other thing I would encourage you to do is wear a pedometer - it really helps making sure that your exercise isn't neglected or too much.

thanks for your comments Barhi. I have to be honest going back work ASAP is not my goal. I would need to be able to sit on a chair for 4yrs and be able to drive my car for 30mins without any discomfort or pain will be the goals but i will speak to the pyhsio about this.

Also i work on the 1st floor up two sets of stairs and there is no lift at my work and the toilet is downstairs. These are the things that concern me about returning to work
