Time from gynecologist appointment to surgery

I had a fibroid discovered last year in August in my home country and told to monitor. The size was 7/8 cm at the time. 2 weeks ago I had scan and the sonographer was shocked how big the fibroid was - it has also grown and now it is 9/10 cm. It seriously affects my life as I can feel/touch it, have very heavy long periods, pains and urinate very often. Also the idea that something is growing in me is very depressing.

My appointment to see a specialist is on 09/06. This is pretty far, I was expecting that after having a scan I will meet with gynecologist and will have a surgery by end of april approximately.

I would like to ask you:

When you see a specialist and they agree for surgery how long does it take to have a date for this from the appointment to the actual day for the surgery?

I also booked a private appointment for next week as I hate to be in the dark for months what to expect.

I would not take hormones.

Had coil before and it caused polips and had other problems.

I am 42 and have 2 children, so would prefer an embolisation or laparoscopy rather that wait to shrink.

Any feedback will be helpful, thank you.

Gosh, that is ages to wait for an appointment.

I'm under the care of a gynaecologist that I see every 4-6 months here in the UK. I have numerous fibroids and my womb is the size of a 6 month pregnancy. I had an open myomectomy 7 years ago and my surgoen removed over 20 fibroids. Because of that, my current gynae doc is reluctant to repeat the myomectomy which I'm also keen to avoid. At my last appointment in October, we decided after having 2 x 3 months treatment of Esmya, that I should be referred for embolization. My appointment with the radiologist came through in November, I had an MRI in December and I got offered a procedure date in January but I pushed it back to February. So it was fairly quick for a  non-urgent referral.

Hope my repsonse and others helps you.

I should also add that I'm the same age as you and don't want to lose my uterus.  I have very heavy periods and some pressure symptoms (bladder and bowel) which the Esmya helped with but my fibroids grew back. I'm going to post up my UFE experience after a few more weeks as I've had a painful and unpredictable recovery (it's only been 5 weeks) and I'd like to be a bit more balanced when I write the post!

      Hi Chiwoo,

Thank you so much for your responses.

You are proably not based in London!

I went private and I got perscribed Esmya too. I started with herbs that were perscribed to me from aboad and will take until June.

I hope everything goes well, fingers crossed! Please stay in touch!

Wow. 9/10 is pretty big. I had an embolism in November & can still feel this damn thing. I am very petite & it protrudes. Personally, I regret not having a hysterectomy. I didn't want a myomectomy. Heard that recovery is rough. & I didn't want a huge scar. So if u are not planning on any more kids. I would say to just get a hysterectomy. Only way to truly get rid of fibroids. Once and for all. Best of luck to you.

Thank you for your post. I decided on myomectomy and now taking herbs perscribed by an European doctor to take for 2 months. If the size does not shrink I will have esmya and go private for the surgery - I have it covered by my insurance.

I am also petite (160 cm tall, 47 kg weight) but dont want to go in menopause so early and look bad.

Fingers crossed all is well with you and recovery is quick.

Don't know where you are located but in the US, I went to see the radiologist on around Nov 9 or 10 and had my embolization on Nov 18 of 2016.

      Thank you.

I now take herbs perscribed by a doctor in Europe.

Luckily I can go private covered by my medical insurance and have a myomectomy fairly quickly.
