Hi Hippies.   Nearly at my six week check up (Tuesday). Feeing a lot better. This morning decided to clear out my wardrobe, you ladies wil know why.  After an hours work have had to stop, come downstairs and sit down with a coffee!   Is this normal at this stage?   I long to be back to normal like you all do it just seems sometimes you take a backward step.  What can I expect at my check up with physios?  Can anyone enlighten me? Don't see my consultant till Thursday , two separate appointments.  Help

Well done you! I am a carer for my disabled husband, and had to get carers in for him! Now carers are coping with him! As I am not allowed to bounce off them!social services are annoyed with me! Everything gets recorded in a book! Anyway write down anything you want to ask your consultant! But don't over do things! I am now allowed to load dishwasher and washing machine!regards Amanda

Hi Marlene the tiredness is normal, it takes time to build your stamina up again after the op.

I'm now 11 weeks and I think I'm nearly there as far as stamina is concerned.

At my 6 weeks check, I just saw the consultant who watched me walk to his office, checked my wound and showed me the xray, asked if I had any questions, so I pulled out my 3 pages of questions which made him laugh. We discussed my way forward, I asked for another medical certificate for 2 weeks and off I went.

I would say its taken me about 5 weeks to build my stamina up but again I expect that's different for each person depending on their lifestyle and fitness etc.

We all expect to be back to normal but it's a major operation & recovery time can be long & quite painful. If you overdo things it will only take longer to recover.

My 6week check up was at 7 weeks & I didn't even get to see the consultant! All he did was ask me to come back in 3 months & didn't even look at my scar or ask me any questions. Hope you get more answers than I did. He did let me take a

hoot of my X-ray on his computer though!

physio were brilliant, made me feel like I was making progress.

I'm 9 weeks post op & still feel I have a long way to go, but it's so nice to be free of the pre-op pain.

Not only was your operation a big insult to your body but you may still be anaemic , have electrolytes hinky, maybe low protein. So make sure you eat healthy and maybe have a sports drink - most have electrolytes- every day for a week. Also a lot of us may be low in magnesium & Vit. D so that may also contribute to a bit to how you feel. Hopefully you have had blood work done at discharge from hospital.

    Hi Marlene

Being exhausted is absolutely normal for some time after major surgery, one reason being that you've spent weeks or months building up to it and once it's happened and you're back home all your stress levels drop drastically (even if it doesn't feel like it!) and tiredness is a reaction to how hyped up you were before.  Plus it's amazing how quickly we become physically weaker after being confined to bed for even a few days.  Rest, take care of yourself, sleep when you feel like it (and you probably aren't sleeping well at night) and give it time.

Feeling tired is quite normal.  After my check up, I decided I would change the bedclothes and after getting the sheet off and pillow cases and then the duvet cover, I had to have a sit down and a cup of coffee before I could face making it again and then halfway through making it I had to have a little sit down again, so even when we feel so much better, it takes time to get used to doing things again.  I can now do it all in one go, so eventually you are able to do these things again.  Don't get disheartened, we all get there in the end.
