I had to wait till physio said I could. Knee needs to bend I was told at 100

Bangkok-Johnnie TKR in 2014. Still stiffness and swelling. However, stairs UP STAIRS no problem.  Downstairs HOPPING sideways. That’s why  when using Bangkok MRT and Skytrain I climb upstairs easily. Downstairs I use the escalator or hopping sideways mode.

An exercise bike will bring you on leaps and bounds,I used a foot bike to start, then an exercise bike but looking back I could of gone straight to the bike  it really helps and gets the knee moving so well best thing I did.

Congrats on the stairs! Do what ever your surgeon or pt recommends. I'm at 10 weeks and still can't make it up the stairs properly, still going one step at a time. I started using the bike my second week post up but everyone has different instructions from there doctor.

A stationary bike is great to get your ROM back as you gradually raise the seat to get a full leg extension.  Then it's a helpful warmup before your leg strength exercises.

Stairs are the hardest thing to master post-TKR.  That's because all the strength in your quads, glutes and core is gone.  This one takes time...a lot of it...as you rebuild all those muscles.  The goal is to go up and down stairs normally, alternating legs, without holding on to anything.  Takes strength and balance...this comes in time.  Some reading...

I have managed the stairs, it is really hard work, It is like having a work out, as I have been going up and down stairs for so long. I am really pleased with myself

You should be pleased...it's the last thing to master post-op and takes a lot of time and effort.  The key is rebuilding those muscles so the stress is borne by those muscles and not by the knee itself.  That takes time and work.  Be patient...

There is no way my leg will bend enough to let me pedal.

Put the seat lower and make the revolutions.  Over time, raise the seat a bit every few days to a week until you get full leg extension (straight keg) to do the revolutions.  Just takes time and work.

    Worth a go.

For the first few weeks I put a chair opposite the bike and pedalled that way, which was easier and there was no way I was able to get onto it!

I cannot remember when I got up onto it but it was a few weeks later I think. Just do what you can... it's a great exercise do loosening up,

      Hi Jenny

I can get onto the bike but there is no way I can pedal, it is way to painful. I will see my consultant and physiotherapist and get some advice

Deb,if u think the bike is to much for now then try a foot pedal.I got one before an exercise bike and there good certainly did a job.
