TKR diffrent way of numbing

Hi

I had my left knee replaced about a year ago and when l was being given anasthetic to put me out you also get a injection in your groin which numbs the leg from waist down. I never seen them give me it as l must have been asleep. But l defo got it as when you wake you can't feel your leg for a while and it feels like a tonne weight.

Well l had my right knee done on the 21st. My surgery was at 6pm at night and it was same consultant and anaesthetist and she told me she had started a new way of numbing the leg and it had been very sucesful. This time they done it in front of me. What they do is an ultrasound further down your leg just above my knee. So you see it on the screen they look for the muscle and inject loads of this stuff in while she watches on the screen. Then l was put asleep.

Well l have to say it made a huge diffrence. The did not think l would be up and about the next day but l was at 7am with very little pain. And it continued for a few days and l was home. Then suddenly l got the pain l had with my 1st one it was agony. So l never got away with the pain on knee replacement it was just delayed. I spent 2 days crying with pain and the 3rd it started to ease. Thank god thats my last one for a while. Had 2 new hips and 2 knees and an ankle fusion all in 2 to 3 years. Hard going.

This group is suppose to be to give people confidence and support with regards a knee operation I had a knee replacement with a spinal injection and sedation. I knew nothing Yes! You are given an injection to help with pain and infection before you leave the theatre. I was in a ward of eight ladies not one person was in agony. Little pain and uncomfortable especially sleeping but nursing staff are in hand if you need painkillers nothing strong. I enjoyed a lunch then out of bed within two hours for a trip to the bathroom with a frame walker. I had another knee operation age 15 l am now 68 They kept me in bed three weeks that was agony in what you could call the older end days. I am due a replacement on that knee 3rd of Jan l am nervous naturally but really wouldent like to have read your message if l handnt experience nine operations and worked on an NHS ward it would scare me big time.

There was 6 of us on the ward. We laughed for the two days we were in. The nurses were brilliant, a couple in particular were hilarious 😂

Louise We were the same eight of us the eldest 85 the remainder of us 60+ and a disabled young lady nobody was in agony apart from dreading the nurse approaching with the blood clotting injections We all had a good laugh. The worse part was the ice packs and  the handsome young physiotherapist.

Firstly l apologise if l have seemed negative. I have been a member of this forum for a good few years. I first joined when l was getting my 1st hip replaced. So far most of my posts have been posative as l had a great experienence getting my 2 hips done and at that time l was giving out good advice as you will see l am a 6?. I had my knee replaced last year and there was nothing but good things to say. I healed really quick. Then l had an ankle got fused.

I again am sorry if l offended you. I am 44 and was meant to get my last knee done in the summer but l lost my mum. My best friend. My rock to cancer and l have not been the same since.

This forum is for all types of advice good and bad but l did not mean to scare anyonhe. What l would not do fór my mum 😢. Apologies Laura Dora

Had TKR in June 17. Spinal anaesthetic in then sedation so knew nothing until anaesthetist woke me up to say they were almost finished !! Know I had femoral nerve block - groin injection - and also local anaesthetic injected round knee. These were both done when I knew nothing due to sedation - also had urinary catheter out in and knew nothing ! Totally pain free for about 36 hours until nerve block wore off then pain arrived with a vengeance but well managed in hospital! Possibly going for other knee next year and will ask for same anaesthetist - and surgeon as hospital experience superb . Will however insist on GP giving more pain relief for first few weeks at home this time!! Now nearly 6 months and while still some discomfort in knee as nerves heal not the burning arthritic pain I used to have and still have in unoperated knee. Knee also very stable and good range of movement both flexion and extension thanks to good physio treatment before and after surgery. Muscle strengthening preop worth it.

You say you had no pain for 36 hours, presume you were soon up walking and doing the stairs etc during this time, so no problems with this and physio during this time?

Well l got my staples out yesteeday as it was 11 days from op. I was dreading it as when l has my other knee done about a year ago my staples were much neater and not sore at all. Infact l could nearly pull the out myself. But they were a bit red and inflammed............well l thought they there was anyway. The nurse seemed happy enough. And she went ahead and took them out. It was nippy and there was weeping from some of the holes had blood, which is normal l know. She cleaned it up and out a sticky bandage back on and said come back in 5 days. But after l got home it was sore and nipping and really itchy. I had extra bandages at home so curiosty got the better.

I took the bandage off and it was red and inflammed and slightly pusey where the holes are. So l cleaned it wit the wipes the hospital gave me. And took a few pics of it and sent it to my cousin who is a nurse and l am going to email them to my consultant just incase. If it is an infection l want to get it asap. Worries me getting infections.

I hope it's not infected but if it is you've caught it quickly. Course of antibiotics and you'll be right as rain 👌
