I am on 20mg a day. I haven't been sleeping well. Today is my day off and I 'think' I fell asleep between 1-2am. I woke up at 1pm with my head racing and feeling uneasy. Do you think it's the meds or just too much sleep?

I took my fifth one last night. I know heightened anxiety is a side effect...but I haven't had any from the med until today.

Then I would say it is side effects. When I started citalopram I didn't have any side effects till two weeks into it. Everyone is different the side effects will subside in 5-6 weeks! Hang in there it will get better!

If you are only 5 tablets in to a presribed medicine like citalopram, its going to be a considerable time before the side effects subside. I had sleep problems for a long time. Wouldn't sleep for a couple of weeks, then I would get a couple of nights sleep, it's something you just have to go through to get to the better times. To be honest, if you are feeling bad enough to have to take a powerful drug like citalopram, you'll probably have to perservere with it. If you have any more question feel free to ask. I've been through it all.

How long did your sleeping problems last and did they settle down on their own?
I am having lots of problems with insomnia , the worst of the other side effects have evened out thank goodness.

Yeah, I know this medication takes awhile to get into your system. I just thought it was odd that I got plenty of sleep and felt weird waking up. I might just have a "sleep hangover". But, it might just be the placebo effect, but I already feel like the medication has dimmed down my driving anxiety a little. No more "lump in throat" feeling and nervousness while driving. I definitely am going to hang in there though. I don't want to go back to feeling constant anxiety all the time. Thank you!

Hmm...I figured most of the symptoms like insomnia and anxiety would go away; considering how far along you are on the med. Now I'm not looking forward to the next couple of weeks! Ugh...

It's makes me tired so I take it at night some people feel wired so they take it in the morning. In the event it does give you insomnia there are other SSRI's out there sometimes you need to change!
