Tooth chip off from gumline after a year of RCT. Dentist says cavity can't affect it now. What to do?

I had a root canal treatment around a year ago. But the tooth broke during the treatment and only a little bit portion remained above the gum line. However, my dentist somehow put a cap on it. Now, that cap along with that little bit portion of my tooth comes off too from the gum line, but its root still remains intact inside. Now, my dentist offered me two options: Bridge and Implant. I'm not in favor of bridges because of sacrificing two adjacent teeth. So, I am thinking of implant, but its costly and out of my budget. So, for implant I need some time to save the money. Therefore, I went to my dentist again to have that root removed so that it doesn't catch cavity until I can arrange the money. But my dentist told me that a tooth that already had RCT is dead and cannot catch cavity. Is he right? or should I go to any another dentist?
