if you post op check up is soon I would leave it to ask the clinic then. Take it gently so you can evaluate if anything causes aches and pains. Side  lying, with a pillow between knees for a short time was one of the first things I tried. After that I progressed to no extra cushion on dining tables.

the first time you sit in a low chair make sure there is something to help you get up.

as you become more supple and confident you will find you have done something without thinking about it!

    all the best

I agree with Maggie - as far as sitting on lower chairs, raised toilet seats etc I would wait to see your consultant first as this is to do with the 90 degree rule.

I am 9 weeks post op (my second) and having been given a reserved thumbs up by my consultant he advised caution before I throw out the raised toilet seat and sit on lower chairs etc.

I did actually sit on a sofa with a cushion to try to raise the seat height a bit at a friends house the other day - the problem was getting up!

I also started lying on my side with a pillow between my legs just for a short time at first and gradually increased it each day. It feels a bit strange at first but it is wonderful not to have to lie on your back all the time.

When are you seeing your consultant?

Lying on your side as the others said, I still use a 8 x 8 inch very firmly stuffed lounge suite cushion between my legs, if my hip is very tired and sore, and that is nearly 10 months on, but as most hippies are aware, I have some problems with my left THR. Also agree with sitting in lower chair, but again have some assistance to get up if you need it, you can use your walking stick, but even my husband dis-agreed with that when he saw me pushing myself upright with my walking stick, he said what if it slips, I then thought about it, and asked for help when I needed it. Best wishes for a very happy Xmas from a hot and uncomfortable queesland.

    Hello Tony,

I was 6 weeks post yesterday and today I'm going down to Southampton to see my surgeon for my six week check, and I have a list of questions similar to the ones you mentioned, I can let you know what he says, but as I'm sure you know, each surgeon has a different opinion and each patient could be given different advice.

Hope you are doing well, I feel wonderful, just hope he's going to lift a few restrictions!

I am 6 weeks on Thursday and seeing my surgeon on Monday. I was not really told anything so have been sitting in lowish sofa and chairs from the get go! Am sleeping on my back still with cushion between my knees and have tried for short periods on my non operated side with cushion between my knees so I will probably get told off about the low seats. However I am not bending without sticking my leg out behind me. I am walking outside with one stick and around the house sometimes without as I keep forgetting it!!

Agreed with the ladies here - I am 7 weeks post-op tomorrow (and 3 weeks pre op too), and I am still using raised seating to keep the risk of dislocation down - that being the greatest risk for us with posterior (rear of buttock) incision.  You really do not want to risk dislocation, and go back to square one (do not collect £200, but you may have go to jail/hospital for it).

With my surgeon's permission I have started laying on my side a bit, but very carefully , with a pillow between my legs.

Take it slowly, if it hurts, stop doing it !

    Best wishes

My post op appointment is not until January which will nearly 9 weeks. . I have had a busy three days and feel quite jaded today, plus I hardly slept because my back ached. However on the whole I feel things are going very well. Tony

Tony - sounds as if you have discovered some muscles you had forgotten you had, or have not been using for a long time. Know how you feel.I went swimming on Tuesday, and had nothing but trouble the whole time with my hip, quite painful, but kept doing my exercises gently trying to work through the pain, eventually my left leg admitted defeat and relaxed, but stayed sort of numb but the pain was gone. Spoke to physio who was working with someone else, also happens to be my physio, and he said he noticed I was having problems, i told him what happened, he expressed his fears I may have overdone it, I said I don't think so, or maybe more correctly I hope not. Yesterday Wed, its as though working through like I did has helped, the constant feeling of cramp inside my leg has finally released after 10 months, progress at last. Happy Xmas to you and all your family from a hot and humid queensland.

I had my 6 week check at 5 weeks yesterday. Was told to follow the 90degrees rule for another six weeks. However, can diich the walker and sleep any position as long as I keep a pillow between my legs.
