Tredelenberg Gait

I had my first hip replaced in 2009 and the muscle that should be on the hip came off after surgery so for the last ten years I have walked like a penguin! Three different surgeons have told me there is nothing I can do and that is not good enough for me. I have been reading other peoples experiences with this gait and the advice to stand on the bad leg is good except I cannot do it. When I try the whole side goes down can anyone tell me do I keep trying and will it improve if I do and get easier. I do 30 excerices walking sideways with a 10lb rubber band every other day which I am told will help. If I lie on my good side I cannot lift my right leg. I need to know how to add strength to that leg and then I will be able to walk normally again. I manage to play gold twice a week and go to Tai Chi once a week it helps with balance. Is there anyone that can give me a glimmer of hope that with hard work I will improve?

The muscles have been asleep for 10 years and now when I exercise they hurt so I am going to a Sports Massage Therapist on Monday to see if he can free them up for me to make it easier. Having said that nothing on this journey is easy. You have to have a hip replaced that is causing pain and problems, everything is good the pain has gone but you have a new set of problems!!

make sure you are eating correctly to gain muscle mass. If you arent getting enough/too much protein, carbs, fat, you will not gain muscle mass like you are wanting. My advice would be hire a trainer that will help you with your diet and exercise. Good luck!

    Anne,

I had both hips replaced in 2017, six week apart. The right hip went well, the left not so good. Two different doctors, two different prosthetics, two different approaches. The best thing is I have no pain. The worst is I have difficulty walking and must use a cane for short distances and a walker for longer walks. I went for PT and continue to work out on my own. I can use a stationery bike for 5 miles at a cardiac intensity and I use a weight machine (45 lbs) for 75 reps hip abduction and adduction. I do this 3x a week. I ask myself how I can complete my exercise get off the machines and not be able to walk? (the reason I changed surgeons is the one who did my right hip dropped out of my insurance plan)

I can stand on my bad leg and lift the good, but when I stand on my good leg I can't lift the bad as it turns in at the knee and knocks me off balance. Both doctors insist my x-rays look good. I asked about revision surgery, but the doc that did the left hip discouraged me saying there is no guarantee it would improve and could get worse.

I'm sure I can shop around for a surgeon to do revision, but would it be the right thing to do?

I am a senior and belong to many groups and I feel cheated. Many of my friends had hip and or knee surgery and they are still dancing. So Anne, I can't offer much hope, but if there is someone out there who knows what can be done, let Anne and me know. In the meantime Anne, don't let this discourage you. Get out there and do what you can do.

Don't give up try anything that might work and get a good trainer who understands your problem and see if they can help. What I am attempting may take me a year of hard work but in the end it will be worth it. Another though for you is that if it was negligence that caused your problem you may like to talk to an attorney they don't charge for a first consultation so go for it. I would have sued but left it too late and the statute of limitations had run out. I will say a prayer for you Bernice I know exactly where your coming from. Let me know if you have any luck finding a solution.

Wow.I dont know how you have lasted this long. I cant see how any exercise is going to help if the muscle isin't connected. The muscle would have atrophied by now. I dont know what you could do,maybe have an ultrosound / mri??? to see whats happened to the muscle, they might be able to reattach it with synthetic tendons/ ligaments if its not too late. I dont know what country you live in as our medicare system in Australia you wouldnt have to pay. Good luck.

We have 5 muscles associated with the hip and walking, I lost one , which was pretty major but we have 4 more minor muscles which can be developed and trained to take over. It will take time but even a month into exercising every other day I see a small improvement. I will keep you posted as time goes by. By the way I live in Florida. Thanks for the good luck.

Thats good we have other muscles to take the load,I didnt know much about them.. Hope you recover well. Is it too late to rescue the main muscle???? Regards Linda

Yes it was too late 10 years ago, I saw 4 different surgeons they all told me any chance of recovering the muscle had less than 10% chance of success. Thank you for your interest I find it very encouraging. Best wishes Anne.

HI I have a similar situation. Had hip dysplasia at birth which was not picked up until I was walking for awhile. Had plaster cast treatment etc., but they were never fully right. Had hip replacement surgeries which were quite successful. Then 25 years after the socket (acetabulum) shattered on my left hip, had revision surgery, followed by the right hip six months later.Unfortunately my muscles are quite weak and, after numerous hydrotherapy sessions and endless physio cannot feel any improvement and have to walk with two crutches all the time. I also need to have my left hip revised again as bone not knitted around it. That of course has lead me to reduce my exercising as afraid it may dislocate.Haven't met anyone else though in my situation, physios say it should come good but dont know if they are just trying to be positive and encouraging !

Keep doing the exercises they will work but it will take some time. I have also gone to have a massage in that area about twice a month and that is helping. Find a masseur who understands what you are trying to do.

Good luck it is not easy and I feel your pain. I will pray for you. Keep in touch with your progress.

Thanks for your response. Yes, might look for a good masseur. Hope you are doing well.
