Hi Suki66  I had a TKR in June this year and I had a lot of swelling Bruising and tightness I used a lot of ice packs plus Arnica gel for the bruising and the tightness is just great now it's nearly gone, I bought a pedle cycle which you use when you are sat in a chair 5 mins in a morning 5 mins in the evening plus doing my excercises and really I have had no problems I'm going to go in after Christmas for my left TKR . Good luck hope this helps x

At three weeks, expect the pain to continue a while longer.  Manage it with your meds, ice and elevation.  Probably off the opioids in the 30-60 day range.  Titrate down to Tramadol and then Ibuprofen.

Tight band feeling can last up to 18 months.  Get used to it...that one will take a while.  Plus the stiffness you feel after sitting a long time.  All normal.

Swelling will decrease steadily (except on the days you overdo it and get a "balloon knee"wink.  Even at 9-10 months, your TKR knee will still look a little bigger than your original one.  Goes away gradually over time.  Normal.  Hint...  Get a pedometer to track your steps every day.  When you get swelling, note the steps, back off, then increase again gradually.

Had it done right after my 68th birthday in March of 2016.  I'll be 70 this February.  Do I look 70???  Still gigging...  The Blues keeps me alive...

Does anyone have anything positive to say about tkr? Suki 3wks in xxx

Yeah...  Once you get to your one year anniversary and look back, you realize that all pain and work you went through just paid off...BIG TIME!!!  You see how all the pain you suffered before the op is gone...that all the rotten activity choices you were forced to make because of a bad knee are now replaced by a variety of new, soul-enriching alternatives.  For that, and so much more, I NEVER regret doing the op.

Yes, it's sheer hell at the beginning and takes a huge amount of commitment and work to get through that first year but the end result is worth all that effort.  Plus there's a bonus...

You get to find a strength in yourself that you never knew was there.  However, this only works when you're determined to do battle and conquer every obstacle in your way.  Gotta be tough...gotta be strong INSIDE no matter what comes your way.  There are great rewards at the end of the rainbow.  You just have to fight for them.
