Unusually heavy and long period.

Hi. I'm 53, started my periods at 11 and have been quite regular all my life. Last year I missed a few months, this year I had one normal period on Feb and one in July. I've not really suffered with menopause symptoms, felt a bit hot and clammy occasionally but nothing major. However nearly 5 weeks ago my period started. It was very light, almost nothing really for the first 3 weeks but then it became very heavy, with clots, nothing I've suffered ever before. Saw my gp last week. She examined me and said although she thinks it's menopause symptoms she wants me to go for scan and an investigation. The appointment is in a fortnight so very quick. She says it's quick, not because she's worried but because she wants it sorted quickly for me. I'm having blood tests next week, she doesn't want to treat with hormone meds if the blood tests show that until after I've been to hospital. I've had 4 days of tablets to make the flow lighter. They helped a bit and I rang gp to see if I could continue and she said yes, for another 4 days and then to ring again. I know she says not to worry but I am simply because of the quick appointment and that this is completely different for me. Any thoughts gratefully received!

Don't worry. Your symptoms are very normal for the beginning of menopause. You may have developed a uterine fibroid but nothing to worry about. Be thankful for the quick appointment. That way you don't have to sit and worry. She may have rushed the appointment so you don't become anemic. Which is good.

I'm from America so I'm confused why I keep seeing all these posts where you're going to a gp doctor for what here we would go straight to the gynecologist for. Is there a reason for that ? Just curious.

But don't worry you will be fine

Hello no thank you for your reply. I'm probably overthinking things but it's hard not to.

Here we tend to go to our gp for every ailment and we are then referred to a hospital if gp feels it's necessary. Unfortunately this can lead to long waiting times. The alternative is to pay and go privately which is quicker but even then it's usually via a gp referral.

Oh sorry, not sure why it says 'no sorry' in my previous reply!

Wow, this must be menopause typing issues, I meant of course 'thank you' not 'no thank you' or 'no sorry'!!
