Vaginal Hysterectomy tomorrow

Posted , 9 users are following.

I'm going in for my hysterectomy tomorrow and really apprehensive.  Just discovered this site and I think it's brilliant to be able to share experiences.  I am nervous about what I'll be able to do or not do afterwards - I have a dog and would like to be walking asap.  Any advice?

Hello kathy, I'm 6 weeks post op tomorrow.

Mine was keyhole full removal. I was in hospital 4 days due to complications. Had to have blood transfusions. This is not normal, so pls don't panic.

if they offer you pain suppositories take them. They are amazing. After all we've gone through, it's worth the 2 second  probe lol.

you will have a Cathiter in for 24hours usually, you have the sensasion you want a wee. Werid. They'll encourage you to stand, do it, if you put it off it hurts more.

i took some stool softeners as struggled. Also peppermint water, it helps with the wind. I took it as soon as awake and didn't suffer with it.

You will have gauze inside you, they remove the next morning, breathe deep when they do it.

for the 1st 2 weeks I couldn't do anything. No bending. Going to the loo tired me out. So sleep when your baby tells you. I've got a dog and started walking her after 4 weeks. I could go far, and managed 50 ,enters im now up to Healy 2 miles. Down from my usual 6 a day.

Take nighties, as they need access. Plain crisps if you feel sick and some mints. You'll be pretty much out of it. My husband came next day and I don't remember him visiting.

after 2 days I was up sitting in my chair, going to the loo on my own and washing myself.

My first bed bath and wee on the portable toilet something I'll never forget. You get wind. That's all I'm saying and. Had a male nurse. Lol

    keep laughing it helps honest..

just don't Rush your body will tell you when you are ready.

    Hi Kathy

Welcome to the site, there are lots of lovely Hyster Sisters here with tons of help and advice when you need it.  Good luck for tomorrow, hope everything goes well.  I am still waiting for my op, but I should have a vaginal hysterectomy and as I have a small dog I was told I can walk her just a little way after about 4 days and to increase each walk by a few yards but I think it really depends on what type of operation you are having so you need to ask your Specialist Nurse.

    Warmest Wishes

    Hi Kathy

Good luck for tomorrow. I am 3 weeks post vaginal hysterectomy and repairs. I echo what others say. I was in for four days but since I came out I have been ok haven't had to take painkillers just taken it very easy. I have 3 dogs and was advised not to walk them for at least four weeks as they can be unpredictable. It's really strange going on my short walks with it them but I know it will be worth it in the end.

It's going to be so weird... I am not used to missing my daily walkies...  Husband also going on work trip 10 days in, so I'm going to have to call on my friends to help out!

I am 10 weeks post vaginal hysterectomy, I went for my first dog walk about 3 weeks after my op, my dogs are running loose most of the time but if you do much lead walking just be careful your dog (if it's a large breed) doesn't pull.

If your experience op-wise is anything like my own you will hardly know you had anything done, I had no pain afterwards and haven't taken any pain relief whatsoever, beforehand you will possibly have a spinal block before your anaesthetic and this helps enormously with pain relief, I was home on day 3 and walking in the small private copse at the back of my house the same afternoon while my hubby took the dogs for their second walk of the day.

Let us know how you get on......You will be fine smile Good luck.

Thanks Phoebe... and as my dog is also called Phoebe your advice must be taken as extra special! smile  She isn't a large breed (collie/lab cross) and doesn't pull, but still will wait for a few weeks.

    Hi Kathy

I am 5 weeks post vaginal hysterectomy and bladder repair and my experience has been really good overall.  My op was done at 8.30 in the morning and when I came round at 11.00 I thought I was still waiting to go down for the op - didn't realise it was all over!  Sat up in bed at 1.30 and had a sandwich and 3 cups of tea!

I was lucky to be in a private wing (for free as we had complained to the CEO about bad handling of the cancellation of my first date) so I had first class care. Was discharged after 3 days with no pain, discomfort or bleeding.  At 2 weeks post op I did overdo things as I felt so well I thought I could do anything, but had a bad bleed and had to rest for 2 days.  Don't be fooled into thinking you are Wonderwoman!!  Try to avoid twisting, crouching, bending or stretching.  I found that walking is very beneficial and have walked from the first week post op.  I can now walk for quite a long time and contemplating a gentle jog at the weekend.  I am due back to work on the 18th and feel that I will be completely OK by then.  I was worried before the op and didn't know what to expect but it has been fine.  I had to have a tooth out last week and that was far more traumatic!!

Best of luck and I hope you have an easy ride as well.

Hi Kathy. Firstly can I Wish you good luck for tomorrow. Secondly you really don t know what will happen with you as each experience is different, you can only read others experiences and hope. Mine was vaginal hysterectomy with anterior and posterior repair. It was done ten days, ago. The first night I was uncomfortable from the pack. Was very relieved when it was taken out next morning. I had no wind d problems at all.The catheter was, removed after two days. I had to be able to wee twice and could then go home. It was like nothing had happened. No pain, very little bleeding just wonderful. Only thing was no bowel movement yet. Took Dulcolax and had several movement the following day. From then everything went downhill and I m in hospital. A doctor friend says it's very rare to have complications so don t worry, relax and do as you're told. You will have an easy ride and so be out wAlking those dogs soon. Claire
