Vision deterioration after cataract surgery

I knew I'd need reading glasses but my surgeon was clear that he was putting in a 'distance' lens. My distance vision was fantastic a couple of days after the surgery but has been deteriorating since. Is this normal? I had a battery of tests at the eye hospital yesterday and there's apparently nothing wrong - but the doctor said he had no explanation. He could only say it takes a while for the vision to settle down. I'm terrified that my vision continues to deteriorate.

    We must asume that there is nothing wrong with your eyes but that for some reason your vision has deteriorated. I would go to an optician and ask for an eye test to see if the lenses he tries improves your vision.

    When did you actually have surgery Sharplady?  I know that I had to wait for a couple of months or so before having my eyes tested for new specs.  And I had to have laser treatment after 2 or 3 months and then they did an eye test for new specs.  At that time, the Ophthalmologists did eye tests,  I don't know whether they do now.

    You saw the doctors at the eye hospital yesterday, was that the Consultant, or one of his team?

      Why did you have laser treatment? Was it to correct a problem associated with the cataract operation?

    I had the surgery 3 weeks ago. My concern is that the doctor I saw yesterday said there was no reason for my eyesight to deteriorate - it was unusual and he had no explanation. It wasn't my surgeon I saw, he's off till tomorrow when I hope to speak to him. Thanks very much for the responses.

    3 weeks isn't very long.  Your eye or eyes have had a battering, so they need time to recover.  It was after 2 months that they decided to do the laser treatment, on the capsule that supports the lens.  It is a very thin membrane that is left in tact following the removal of the lens, it can sometimes become opaque and they made tiny holes in it.  I did count how many but I forget now!  It is a minor thing.

    But, as I say, 3 weeks isn't very long.  Try not to worry and good luck with your surgeon.

      Can an optician diagnose that or does it take specialist equipment?

      It depends how good/experienced  the Optometrist is as to whether or not he spots it  but it is only done by Ophthalmologists, the specialist equipment is in the hospital

    Thanks very much indeed. I'm just concerned that noone warned me my vision might deteriorate and am very disappointed. Also a bit concerned that the eye specialist in the hospital didn't know why!

      Have you managed to speak to your Consultant yet,  I hope that when you do, he will be able to reassure you.
