Week 1 Pain

Hi, I am 47 years old and on day 5 of my right THR. I am so sore and stiff in my thigh, is this normal? I have been going through some other posts and see people say 'home and pain not 2 bad' or 'home from hospital and not needing pain relief'. I am still taking oral morphine, couldn't cope with the pain without it. Is this normal? Thanks

What is normal ..... There is no normal.

Spme people have a higher pain tolerance, and surgery outcomes vary so much.

I had different recoveries for my surgeries, and ecpext something different when i get seen thos week or next for my second revision

Soreness and stiffness goes when you get properly mobile.

Hi..yes I think it's normal to be sore and have stiffness...your ONLY 5 days out....it's good to get up and move around ..when you get up are you experiencing and pain? Are you able to walk around with aids? Everyone is different..you are basically fresh out of surgery..make sure you elevate your feet..that helped me

    Hi Helen

Yes quite normal mine was about twice the size of the other one too!  Don’t worry you should keep taking the painkillers as these will help keep you mobile.  You must move around and walk and that will help the stiffness.  Little and often.  I’m a year and a half down the line and life really does get better for me it took a year really and I started to feel normal around the 8 month mark.  .  Be kind to yourself too plenty of rest eat good food and don’t worry if you get a bit tearful at times.    Keep a diary you will be amazed in a couple of weeks what you can do that you can’t do now!

    Take care Julie

    Hi there,

Completely normal I am 7 weeks post op and still take the odd bit of morphine at night to help the muscle spasms . Stiffness and swelling is normal but as others have said goes as you are more active. Take the drugs when you need them, that's why you were given them. Best of luck

Thank you for your replies. I think I am just expecting too much. I'm also so frightened of something going wrong, maybe not moving around as much as I should be which won't help the stiffness I suppose. I am doing the exercises but sitting alot.

Ok, tomorrow is a new day! Thanks again, Helen

Hi Helen - like you I am on day 5 it's pretty hard isn't it rolleyes I feel stiff and get in pain still and so hard just sitting !  I find taking pain killers makes me feel out of it not taking them I'm hurting ... no easy answer ATM is there. I had my other hip done last year and don't remember having this horrible stiff feeling, it's hard getting your foot off the ground ! But if it's any consolation we,re all in it together and another 4 wks from now we,ll hopefully be looking back on this and thinking thank goodness all that's gone now ! I,m also getting spasms in my joint which is really painful if anyone has had this would like feedback ... how do you manage Helen at this stage getting in and out of bed? Must admit my husband has to help me rolleyes  hugs & wishes to you x

      Hi,

Thank you for your message I really appreciate it.

Yes it hurts to sit, hurts to lie and when I walk so I am sleeping as much as I can! 😊 I know myself I need to walk more so that's on my to do list as of today. So while the sun is still shining I will be doing laps of the garden.

I get in bed good leg first which works fine for me but I do struggle to get out because of stiffness and pain which I find frustrating. No spasms though so I cannot comment on that although someone else has mentioned that in 1 of my replies.

Wishing us both a speedy recovery!

      Take care x

Hi Helen yes it's easy to get lazy cos of the effort I'm aLao going to try- I did walk about for 10 minutes yesterday evening outside and felt good having done it, but since have pulled a muscle under my arm from crutches use... can't win rolleyes when I had my other hip done last year I do remember feeling good initially when I got home then sort of sliding downhill which I'm doing now, feeling worse struggling more and feeling abit down tbh, but hopefully once the first wk comes everything will slowly improve! X

    Hi helen,

Your recovery is your recovery, I fell into the trap of feeling inadequate as other people seemed to be doing 100 times better. I did not go out for just over a week, I lost confidence in myself, that was a shock. Like you I did not want to do any damage, 13 weeks post op I am still take care not doing anything stupid but, you will progress suddenly, you will realise you are moving without thinking. Take care.

    Hi Helen

Hope you don't mind me emailing. I am 45 and need a hip replacement. Just saw your post and age and wondered how you are getting on?

    Thanks

Hi, I am only 6 days in so still early days for me. I am finding it difficult to get around yet because of stiffness but I think that could be because I am sitting for long periods (as of today I am going to walk more, little and often) I am in quite alot of pain, more than I thought I would be to be honest but as others have said everyone is different and im sure that over the next few weeks this will ease.

You will be fine, and I feel better about it already from the replies I have had on here. I'd been googling hip replacement recovery all week but couldn't find any real answers until I found this forum!

Let me know how you get on x

I am day 10 and last couple of days and nights have been an improvement! So don’t worry it will come. And with more mobility and a reduction in swelling (which wasn’t too bad) I get less pain from being on my bum.

Worth keeping a little record. I’m having to because I’ve got 3 other health issues right now, 2 of which are causing big problems and my record keeping is helping the drs decide what treatment I can and cannot have. But within all that I can see my hip and I are making progress!!  Also terrified of ‘doing the wrong thing’. Put our bed up on books last night as I kept going into spasm getting out of it. Much safer now! (The feet wouldn’t fit in raisers I’d bought). Hope you turn a corner soon!

    Dear Helen,

It’s really like that.  Everyone heals differently. I’m into 7 weeks and still partially numb on my foot and leg.  I’m still taking painkillers, dicoflenac.  It will slowly improve.

Take care.. have a speedy recovery !

    Millie
