Weight gain in TKR recovery

Posted , 3 users are following.

I have to watch my weight anyway. Managed to lose 1/2 body weight over the last 7 years but I'm worried that I've put on a stone already in recovery.mwas very active. But sitting around is taking it's tolls when the pain kicks in I eat a bit more than normal.

i am wondering is the fluid in the swelling of the leg carries much weight. My leg is quite big.

Anyone have the same experiences

I've managed to put on half a stone over the last six weeks and I know it's because I've been sitting around and comfort eating because of the pain so I know exactly what you meansad I shall have get back to Slimming World ASAP especially with Christmas coming up too!

I lost 30 kilo on Celebrity slim. Kept it off for 3 years but I have put on 5 kilo this past week. I think it's down to the painkillers, definitely not the chocolates, no can't have been them.

Yes, that sounds good. Christmas movies and biscuits.

I still find Christmas strange here. How can you have tinsel when everything is sparkling in the sun? Spray snow ..... Well that's just weird when the temperature is soaring. And it's far too hot to have a turkey in the oven for hours.

Do you know that in Oz we have something called Christmas in July, a lot of the restaurants and the casino have Christmas decorations and traditional Christmas dinner.

When I first went to the doctors, someone saw my scar and asked me if I had been attacked by a shark. This caused some laughs on this forum. Yesterday my local beach was shut because someone got bitten by a shark. That's how common it is in Western Australia.

p.s. I think if the biscuits are chocolate they are ok

Love it Caz. You gotta get through it with a sense of humour. I have hear of christmas in July I think it's a good idea to brighten up the colder and darker days which christmas is all about really.

Maybe we should adopt a christmas barbie and beach day here but as you know we can never guarantee what the weather will be like.

Temperatures are falling now and snow predicted in Scotland next week.

if you eat the biscuits in one mouthful I think that's less calories

Yes, that theory works. Also I think I heard that Coca cola dissolves biscuits quickly so drinking that at the same time is probably the way to go.

You have been awake all night again haven't you?

I have heard that too. I think the same goes if you Knicks them from someone when they aren't looking.

I had a small glass of red wine last night and slept so well

Talking of weight gain. We have just last week had our first Krispy Kreme shop open. What is it with these donuts? We actually had a queue camp out for 2 days before it opened. And a 24 hr drive thru, wtf! Who needs a donut in the night?

Actually, scrap that, I expect you do Soobeedoo!   Only kidding, but really, is it the same in UK?

Hi Caz I have only recently heard about Krispy Cremes on an American TV show. I don't understand why they're so good. Do nuts here tend to be jam injected or iced with sprinkles. You can only really get one or two in your mouth at the same time :o)

luckily for me I don't drive and the nearest 24 hour shop we have is Tescos about 2 miles away. This is one time when having knees with a mind if their own helps.

I prepared my kitchen with loads of healthy stuff , I filled the freezer with soups and homemade dinners before my op. But me main goal of the day is to walk around the corner to the shop to get anything that isn't home made and healthy!!!! Lol

i had a craving for peanut butter last night on crisp bread so that makes it healthy? But I am cracking down this week I have defrosted a homemade bean casserole so guess I better eat it. :o/

I have chained myself to a large millstone so I can't go to Tescos during the night because when you get a craving I would probably crawl up there (although I'd probably have to roll up there as I'm not so good at crawling on my new knee)

The moral of this story keep away from Krispy Kremes LOL

Where do you live? We don't have any 24 hr supermarkets. When we first came to Australia 25 years ago, the shops shut at 12 noon on Saturdays. It's a bit better now, they stay open until 9 pm weekdays and 5 pm on the weekends, but then they don't open til 11am.

I really love barbeques, and salads. I have never liked crisps or chips, my downfall is bread. I am not overweight but I would like to be as light as I can for my knees.

Doesnt the level of after hospital care vary from country to country? It's quite amazing.

      Keep up the good work

      I live in Hampshire UK.

i think my surgeon was fabulous and he came to visit me everyday I was in hospital. He told me exactly what to expect. He said I had the biggest knee cap he'd ever seen. So proud!!!

i remember the days when all the shops used to close early on Thursdays and never open Sundays now we have one shop that opens 24/7

being nocturnal it's good it's not near by.

i just need to nock off 20lbs but I did used to weigh 330 lbs . But like you say it's best for the knees.

must be quite warm in Oz now.

One of my brothers lives in Brickenhurst, Hampshire. It's beautiful there.

So, big knees? Did you have a custom made TKR?

Yes, it's getting very warm here, first day of summer was December 1st. Perth has lovely heat. We don't often have the humidity, it's a dry heat. It's good for me because I had rheumatic fever as a kid. In UK I ached so much in the winter.

About 8 years ago I slipped over in a puddle of water in the shopping mall, the roof leaked. I went one way, my knee went the other, the crack sounded like a gun shot, felt like it too. I have had 2 arthroscopies and now this TKR.

I drove to the shops today, my knee felt heavy and started to swell. I thought I was doing so well, never mind, I will try again tomorrow.

Great you got in the car and went for it. Hope you didn't buy Krispy Kremes. yes Brockenhurst is beautiful I go there quite a lot. Live winter christmas but could do with some warm sunshine at the moment.

my knee cap was surrounded in with boney spurs making it bigger. My surgeon said he was sorry he couldn't produce it in a jam jar for me !!

that fall sounds horrible. Long journey to TKR eh

I was carrying 13 stone extra, got hit by a car and knocked around by pigs (long story ) which made my knees changing.

do you live in the country

No, I live about a 25 min drive from Perth city centre. The town I live in is called Kwinana, named after one of the first fleet I think. To get to the country isn't very far. We like to drive south for 3 hours to the Margaret River Wine area. The scenery is very much like England, driving through forests.

Today I am paying for going out yesterday. My knee is swollen so it's icing and elevation today.

i have to see my physio on Friday, I'm not looking forward to that. He manipulated the bend a month ago and it was very painful for days after. He said if my bend isn't more than 105 he will do it again on Friday.

Good luck tomorrow  taking your dressing off. It's as scary as injecting yourself in the stomach, I had to do that for 28 days!

Thanks Caz .Oh why did you have to inject yourself

i had to do that for 3 days as I have a very low white blood cell count and had to inject GCSF to boost them up.

we call them physioterroists. Must be a funny job when you know you're going to inflict pain but you know it's for the best

i hope Friday is better than you think it's going to be will be thinking of you

It was a blood thinning injection, to avoid blood clots. my sister-in-law had a TKR in Croydon last week and she has taken them home with her too.

I have been vacuuming today, for the first time since my op in September. And riding the exercise bike with the seat on the normal height. I think I have made an improvement to my bend.

We have a spa ( jacuzzi, hot tub) and we got it up and running this week for the summer. I have been loving it, those jets massage  my knee, I'm sure they are helping me.

I will know I am better when I can take one of my dogs out for a walk. I have 3 great Danes.

      Do you live alone?

yes I live alone my choice. Quite happy. Lots of friends and family near by.

jacuzzi sounds gorgeous. We are having some spectacular sun rises at the moment. Facebook is filled with lovely photos.

i can't wait to get back on the bike and swimming again. Booked myself a short triathlon for July hahaha.

but I always walk the run bitbit
