Weird head feelings and perimenopause

Hi, I'm a 40 y/o who has actually been in perimenopause for over a year now. It started at 39 when I missed a period one month, then had a very heavy period the following month and from then on the irregular periods and symptoms all began. I get the hot flushes often where my face only becomes very hot and my cheeks bright red. These can last for hours when they happen. But most recently I've been having these weird head sensations, it's very hard to describe. I feel off balance, but not dizzy per se. The back of my head feels tight and sometimes like pins and needles. No headaches or pain at all. Just an off balance pressure like feeling. Almost like my head isn't sending the signals to my body fast enough kind of off balance. Hope that makes sense. Anyone else experience this? And I can have this feeling last all day long without subsiding at all. Also, I've noticed I can actually feel my heart beating when I lay down. It beats very hard, not fast. Is this normal? I have been to Dr who finds no other causes but says perimenopause symptoms can very and come and go as our hormones fluctuate all the time. Can't help but be scared when I feel like I'm going to fall over or my heart is going to explode. Any help out they?

Yes to all, though not always pins and needles. My "hot flashes" really only showed up as face flushing for years before I ever experience a true hot flash - and the red face and pressure head could last a long time! I used to describe it as so much pressure in my head that it felt like air needed to escape from my ears. The pounding, thumping heartbeat at night will also bother me while upright sometimes - i think it is related to my ears/eustachian tubes as i have fairly significant tinnitus at times (all times really but it can definitely go off the charts). These are all scary feelings when they first crop up, and you discover that there are no explanations for them other than perhaps peri-menopause. After years of dealing it with them though, you start to believe that it is actually yet another weird symptom of this stage of life. Often hard to believe though!

I'm so sorry you had to go through this and suffer for so long. I switched to an IUD over 6 years ago when I was 41. I was extremely happy with it but now realize it would have been so much better to have stayed on my combined birth control pills because it would have prevented descending into maddness over the last few years as I unknowingly entered into peri.

After a particularly rough 6 months of trying to find a doctor that took perimenopause seriously, was familiar with endometriosis and didn't focus on fertility I finally went back on birth control pills to stop the ups and downs of my estrogen and after less than 2 weeks most of my misery has gone away.

Why are doctors so willing to let women suffer? Why are women so willing to suffer? There are solutions to these serious life altering symptoms. It is extremely upsetting to me that any doctor is telling women they should not do HRT or birth control pills. There is an excessive amount of evidence based on very good science that shows it dramatically improves quality of life and actually protects our bodies. Some women can't, but that is a small subset and they are developing treatments for more and more women. Mortality is lower in women who use HRT, especially when they start during perimenopause. It was poor science, based on ignorance and bias, that took so many women off of HRT 20 years ago. That poorly done analysis has been re-done and much more evidence has supported it since, but women still continue to suffer because they believe bad science instead of good science. It makes me so angry.

I'm so glad to of found this link but I am sad to hear so many of you are suffering too. only in the last couple of weeks i started with episodes of night and day palpations which disturb sleep. The weird sensation of feeling like I have a palpation but then feel a wave of what I only describe as a sensation of dizziness almost panicky feeling which is so unpleasant and last week has lead me to a and e in tears thinking about to stroke or have a heart attack. I also get numbness in my left leg and arms but my ECG was fine and no signs of stroke heart issues etc.. I'm awaiting blood tests appt but still have a couple of weeks to wait but it's for sure making me more anxious when this not something I have fortunately ever suffered with. I've recently bought a Kardia machine for the phone which I can check my ECG with just to make sure I'm ok as Heart disease in the family. it's almost like a vertigo feeling but so scary. good luck all it's good to hear your experiences and don't feel like I am going insane!

I understand why you feel so frustrated, I get the most awful head pressure and sickness, I get an awful taste in my mouth like metal or mouthwash, it comes in waves.

I have the implant in my arm so not sure when my periods are, sometimes I'm so upset and I don't say anything because my GP has refused it's anything menopause related. I hope you find some answers, I'm so grateful for this page and women sharing their experiences x x

I am 39 and have not missed a period yet but only bleed for 2 days at a time now.

I have been having strange head sensations too. Not so much as you described but I would describe mine as more like an "out of body experience" like I feel detached from my body, like I am just an observer but still in control. It is a very strange sensation and ESPECIALLY scary when it happens while I am driving.

Same stuff from doctors, they cant find anything wrong and some have even denied that I am in perimenopause because I am still getting regular periods. SOOO FRUSTRATING.

I relate to this so much, I've being getting awful head pressure with waves of sickness, my GP is refusing its anything menopause related! I'm 47.

I have the implant in my arm so I'm not aware when my cycles are, with the weird head pressure comes the most awful metal taste in my mouth, almost like mouth wash...its really uncomfortable.

I feel like no one believed me, I'm so sorry you feel so unsettled and i hope you find comfort real soon x

I think this must be quite a common thing, as I also get similar symptoms to this!

As I'm sat writing this my head is buzzing like there's a bee inside it, (tinnitus) along with headaches (which I hardly ever suffered with prior to this) which are there pretty much every day, and like the majority of other people responding to this head pressure, back of head and all over, I've also developed another symptom of what feels like a lump in my throat, I've had anxiety before and it's most definitely not this, this feels different!

As horrible as it as, as its constantly there, whereas it sounds like most other people are getting it intermittent, I could put up with it if I knew at some point it was going to dissappear, but it's this that's just so depressing as it's like the million dollar question.....when will it go?

i just turned 54 and have been having symptoms since I was 47. Out of the blue one day I felt weird and off balance, almost like I was looking through someone else's eyes. Over the years that symptom has become less but its never gone away and now I have the weird sensation at the base of my neck on top of hot flushes, uti symptoms and general fatigue. Menopause sucks and you still have to get up and go to work etc and try to act like nothings wrong even though you feel like your head is stuffed with cotton wool sigh, I hope you're feeling better ❤️
