What if results are negative after I've taken the medication?

I'm waiting on my swab results and the doctors said it could take anywhere from 1-6 weeks! He prescribed me valtrex in the meantime and I'm also taking a bunch of vitamins in the meantime, one of them being Lysine.

I was wondering what if my results come back negative after I've already taken the 10 days of valtrex.. Will the meds effect me in anyway negatively?

What will take 1-6 weeks? Your swab test?? That doesn't sound right... The meds should not impact your swab test results.

The doctor said the swab test could take anywhere from 1-6 weeks .. I knew that didn't sound right. I didn't know if the meds would effect me if I landed up testing negative after all that, not the results. I'm definitely going for a second opinion.

A viral culture swab should only take a few days, maybe longer if doing it via public healthcare, but up to 6 weeks is ridiculous. Never heard of it potentially taking that long!

P.S. The meds won't do anything to you if you don't have herpes.

I don't know why he would say such a thing.. I just got the call now. Positive sad

Oh no, which type? And clearly not up to 6 weeks, although that makes no difference now. rolleyes

It was a swab test.. They said they couldn't tell? Is this true? I'm going to get blood tested soon. And 3 months again after.

The only way they can't tell by swab test is if they didn't do a type-specific swab, which is stupid. If you still have lesions (even if old) and can arrange a pcr swab somewhere, you can still test, but probably not by viral culture (lesions too old). Blood test must be IgG, not IgM. Test now as a baseline, then again in 3 months if you're negative for IgG now, and if you're not able to find out the herpes type by pcr. I read your other posts and it does sound like B. He even had a herpes scare. Did they test him for it at the time and 3 months later?

The clinic I went to was a mess, I'm definitely going to another office to get my tests done. They tested him for it then, but never showed concern after the results and didn't tell him to come back 3 months later or anything. Being as many people are very ill informed on subjects as these I couldn't believe they didn't think it'd be a good idea to tell him to do so just in case. So even though he never had an outbreak since he could still be carrying and could have passed this it to me, correct? I can't believe it. I was hoping to work things out between me and my most recent but I'm pretty sure I just ruined everything. I'm so disgusted and disappointed with myself.

Due to the timing of your problems, I'd also say B. Yes, viral shedding without any symptoms is the most common way herpes is passed on, and such shedding occurs sporadically, at random, for life. He may have had other outbreaks besides his first, but didn't recognise them as such. Recurrences can be very mild and confused with other things. He should retest by IgG. If you can't get a pcr swab test done, then his IgG should tell you which HSV type you have, as I am pretty sure he is positive and your giver, based on what you've said.

P.S. That's really awful, especially if you were thinking of getting back together with A. sad Is that something that seemed possible or likely? But then why did you guys break up? Sorry, just being nosy, and I can understand how upset you must feel in this particular situation. Genital Type 1 is easier to deal with for both you and any negative partner, Type 2 less so, so it's good to know which.

Since I recently moved I lost all insurance so I had to sign up for new insurance and am waiting for that to process. After that was done I was going to go get blood tested. I really don't want to have to return to that clinic because they were unprofessional and cold and that's my only option right now unless I wanna pay out of pocket. Us getting back together WAS something that seemed possible. I haven't been handling being alone very well clearly and B was constantly trying to be there to console me and unfortunately being in a weak fragile state of mind, I caved and gave in. Me and A needed space from one another we agreed upon a break but it started to feel more like a break up. I was devasted and heartbroken. I just built this whole life with this person and he was willing to let it go and I wasn't ready. And now to know that I could of just ruined so much for him and I and for myself breaks my heart even more. I know that everything happens for a reason but I truly am having a very hard time trying to understand why this. Is it possible to have only one OB? I've read about things like this. I just hate how up in the air and unknown a lot of this crap is. I wish they would find a cure sad

I feel really bad for you. sad I know how you feel, too. I have ex-flames that had to part ways due to external circumstances whom I wouldn't mind getting back together with should it be possible, but now I don't feel that I can. Sigh. My only consolation is that it's unlikely it would be possible again...

Like I said, if Type 1, you are unlikely to have too much trouble with outbreaks. If Type 2, however, and since you already experienced a noticeable first outbreak, even if mild, you could have more. The problem with genital herpes is that it's so random and can vary so much from person to person. While there are classic cases, there are just as many exceptions to the norm, which makes it all very frustrating to know what to expect.

When you do test for IgG at 3 months, let me know how it goes. Or have B test any time. Just make sure it's IgG, not IgM.
