What is scar tissue

After having Scar tissue removed with a capsultomy I am now on the cortisone drops again. I am worried that the drops caused the problem. I had to have them for 6 months and was also on a very small dose of prednisolone for Polymyalga RHUMATICA. Couldn't see out if my left eye for 5 months.

As my doctor explained it to me, the steroid drops actually retard healing a bit, so if anything they inhibit the formation of scar tissue. This is from a pharmacology website, about prednisolone drops:

"Corticosteroids inhibit the inflammatory response to a variety of inciting agents and probably delay or slow healing. They inhibit the edema, fibrin deposition, capillary dilation, leukocyte migration, capillary proliferation, fibroblast proliferation, deposition of collagen, and scar formation associated with inflammation."

Thank you so much. I am glad to hear they inhibit so much. Could it be that too much might not be a good thing. I am surprised there isn't more interest considering the amount of people with PCO. My surgeon said he'd never seen anything like it!

my guess is any autoimmune disease leaves us more open to PCO as our bodies perceive the IOL as a foreign entity... hence the scarring?

i was on steroids for uveitis 4 years ago and that caused my cataracts. i dont know if after cataract surgery steroids cause PCO? what did your doc say?

Thank you for that. My GP wants me off the steroids and my surgeon said he didn't know what caused the scarring. I feel like I am on tricky ground. It is so much better and I don't want it again but I will be happier when I can come off the eye drops. I am on Dexafree and antibiotics.

yes, it's a worry. i know oral steroids do more damage than drops. but, like you, I was on oral and that's when my cataracts became an issue. it seems to be a true balancing act.

I was started on 40mg prednisolone in May 2018 for Polymyalgia and have reduced to half a mg. stopped altogether this week to see if that was causing it. I was keen to have cataracts done but in hindsight I wish I had left them alone. Have an appointment with eye hospital next Thursday.
