What questions did you ask your surgeon at your one-year checkup?

Aloha, all. I can't remember when I was last here - perhaps 6 months? My son is the double hippie. LTHR March 8, 2016. RTHR July 5, 2016. For the first, he had GA, felt no pain & took MONTHS to climb out of the fog. For the second, spinal & immediately in horrific pain in the recovery room. He weaned off opioids within 2 weeks for both. Everyone is different, but for him the painkiller side effects were almost worse than the pain.

A lot has happened since the last op. I helped him relocate from the heartland to the west coast. I've been back in Hawaii for 2 months. Just yesterday, son said he's only now feeling more normal in terms of clarity. He still does get fatigued after walking more than 5 blocks or uphill. He hasn't had effective physical therapy, but that is a whole other story for another time.

Son sees a new orthopedist (because he's in a new town) for his a-bit-over-one-year-mark on Wednesday, so any ideas on questions to ask this surgeon are much appreciated. Here are a few I thought relevant:

- Do I have any restrictions about lifting objects?

- Are there any restrictions that are permanent, and if so....why?

- Can I sit on the floor cross-legged if it doesn't hurt?

- Am I allowed to do squatting exercises?

- I still have swelling? Is that a concern? What should I do about it?

- What signs or symptoms should worry me if they occur?

- When should I return for my next follow-up?

Mahalo for anything you might be able to add to this list.

    Aloha Soos ...

I have been thinking of you a lot --- amazing that a year went by so fast ..

I am happy for son and you that it turned out so well - Is he happy where he lives right now? Is it Oregon or Washington state?

I think that those are brilliant questions - there might still be some restrictions since his 2nd THR was July 2016 -

I wish I had thought of these questions - oh, I did not have one year follow up appointment cry

    Big warm hug

    Aloha

      Aloha, Renee:

      Mahalo for your positive thoughts.

I'm so sorry you have not had proper followup. And still have ongoing probs stemming from your hip ops.

Son feels the same way, so he is RELENTLESS in DEMANDING satisfaction. Not that he's gotten it.

I will update you all as I hear from son.

And Renee - big warm hug RIGHT BACK ATCHA!

      Love, Soos

    Hi Soos,

You mention that your son didn't have effective physical therapy.  PT is crucial for getting your strength back after such an invasive procedure.  If the muscle aren't strengthened back up, it can lead to discomfort and fatigue.  How much exercise does your son get daily?  He should try to get in at least 30 minutes of cardio a day.  Going for a brisk walk in the morning should help to increase his energy for the day.

Make sure that the doctor is aware of your son limitations.  He will be able to lead him down the right path.

    Best of luck!

I'll start a new discussion about the answers - or non-answers from the new surgeon. Mahalo to you all.
