Hi there, I stumbled across this by chance and I am relieved at having done so. My doctor prescribed me 20mg citalopram yesterday for anxiety, panic attacks and depression, in spite of all the news that came out about antidepressants yesterday. Now I wondering whether there is any point in taking them? There seems to be a long list of hideous side effects, and if they apparently don't work then what sense is there in taking them? I really need something though as I am finding it so difficult to cope. :-( Does anybody think there is any point in me starting to take them? Also is it better to take them of a morning or at night? Which of the two have people found preferable? Please help and thanks in advance. I really am quite scared. Laura x

I am in Australia so I don't understand your health system, but here we have psychologists who can listen, and psychiatrists who can listen and prescribe. I have been to both. I still have some demons from my past and have found it extremely hard to discuss one on one with a perfect stranger who is keeping a record of what is being said. But after twelve months I have been able to move forward a little more than I moved back. I have been unable to tell the psychologist everything, saying no when the honest answer was yes, but the psychiatrist struck a chord with me. He is sooo intelligent and so focussed and knew within seconds that I had major depression and within minutes had discarded a number of areas of life experience which could contribute to this.
I have found his intervention to be a life saver.
Please consider seeing a competent psychiatrist if your GP is not able to support you totally. And keep looking til you find one who can listen and is willing to guide you towards a chemical free depression free state. This can happen! Try and work towards being positive, and look after you. You have been honest in this forum. Find a doctor who has heard all these symptoms before, and let him/her help you. xx

Katy is a wonderful person and deserves all the support she can get - if only she would let someone help her!
Come on Katy - open up to a professional, they can and will help you.
I do agree though that it has to be someone you feel comfortable around and feel a connection with.
Breezman, I have asked my GP several times for something to help me sleep, last week I even asked her for something for the muscular pain but she just refuses point blank to prescribe me anything other than the citalopram - she says that is more than enough to be taking and if the muscular pain becomes unbearable to take a couple of paracetamol.
I can see where she is coming from but at the same time I'm not asking for a lifelong prescription, just a few nights sleep would be good.
If these tablets don't bring results I might see another doctor at our surgery and see if he/she would prescribe something for the insomnia. If I don't get some decent nights sleep, I can't see what the citalopram can do to help me. Surely lack of sleep is going to make the anxiety much worse.
Trying to have faith in my GP

Do you play often?
I just rememberedd, when I was a kid my grandmother used to put oil of cloves on aching teeth. It tasted horrid but it worked.
Hope this helps. xx
