What time at night do I take Amitriptyline

Hi. My doctor has just put me on 10/20mgs of Amitriptyline. I have only took 10mg and it has made me very sleepy in the mornings that I have had to have time off work the last few days. My doctor has given it me for chronic pain and not been able to sleep very well. I have to drive in my job and I am a little worried with me feeling so relaxed and sleepy. I have to be up for work at 5am when on early but my shifts then change to night shifts a few days later. I'm a bit confused as to what time to take the tablet. Any help will be very much appreciated.

If you have to wake up at 5am i would suggest you take it at around 6pm presuming you go to bed at 9pm to get up for 5am. It is recomended you take your dosage 3 hours before bedtime. I take mine around 7pm & go to bed between 10 - 10.30pm & wake up at 7am. You need at least 7 - 8 hours sleep. Any more will make you groggy. I have been on my 20mg dosage for 18 months & it took a good 3 months for it to kick into my system. Some it only takes 6 weeks.

As for driving, sometimes i dont finish until 9 or 10pm so if finishing at 9 i take it at 7.30pm & 8pm if finishing at 10pm (as i still have to get up at 7am the next day). If i take it any later i feel groggy & like a zombie. I have never felt groggy on it driving home, but again, it may affect different people differently. The only way is trial & error i suppose. Good luck

It took me about a month to settle into taking 25mg per day. The mornings were the hardest but I found it easier if I medicated about 4 hours before bed time. It will eventually passĀ

    Hi,

Your taking it too late, take it at 6 or 7 pm and you won't feel tired in the morning x
