Where should I be 10 days post THR

Hi could anyone tell me where I should be at 10 days after op... everything went really well, had a super path THR in Warwick but not sure when I should be trying to walk with one crutch? Any help much appreciated. Doing usual bed exercises still but still struggle with stairs.

There are lots of websites on exercises after hip replacement if you do a search.. Indoors you may be able to get around holding furniture. Outside keep 2 crutches going for a few weeks as it warns people that you have a problem. When you reduce to one crutch it MUST be used on the side opposite to the operated hip.I hope you were told how to do stairs i.e. up with the good leg first and down with the operated leg first. Both crutches go with the op. leg or use handrail and one crutch on the other side.

    Good morning.

I am 14 days post-op and have been wondering exactly the same thing.

My physio has just been so I asked him. He said I'm not ready yet and will tell me when. I think it's a very individual thing.

I had to conquer stairs from day 3, (I live in an old mill with stairs everywhere) so they aren't a problem for me now.

      Thanks for your best wishes.

Keep on going in the right direction!

Just spent an hour in the garden in beautiful sunshine doing a sitting down job. Feel tired now but gardening is good for my morale.  😉

Hi, I think just do what feels comfortable. I was lucky, had a very pain free recovery, used 1 crutch after about day 5, but outside I always used 2. As Jomary said, make sure you have the crutch in the opposite hand from the hip. You sound as if you are doing really well. All the best, Judith

Hi Angel, I'm 9 months post-op now & had my THR at the Nuffield in Leamington (I wonder if we had the same surgeon)? My op was extremely successful & my life has returned to normal but looking back, at 10 days post-op I was walking around the house crutchless (!!) & doing lots of 'little & often' walks outside with 1 crutch. Please remember that everyone has a different recovery rate & healing takes such a long time. The one thing my surgeon drummed into me was the importance of doing my exercises & to walk little & often. Another good tip is to practice walking really, really slowly but correctly - heel to toe, heel to toe. If you practice this slowly it will improve any limping & speed will come with time. Good luck x

Hi Fernlady, glad you are doing well....Think we had our ops round about the same time. I'm also doing ok, just been skiing....

Hi fernlady thank you for all that.... well I was in Nuffield Warwick under Michael Cronin who does the super path THR (less invasive) you did extremely well after 10 days!!! I have tried to lose a crutch but unfortunately I get a lot of pain in my hip when I do I find it hard to put all my weight through it! But you have given me a few good tips which I shall follow....thank you for the advice... what I have found last 2 days both my legs and feet feel numb like ' dead leg' which is strange ... I was going to ask if anyone in the forum has had this prior to this feeling I was full of beans !

Hi Judith, glad you are well. Well done for skiing, very brave! I don't think i would have attempted skiing even if i hadn't had a THR! I've posted a new thread for all old hippie friends as i didn't want to hijack Angel's x

Hi Angel, yes same hospital but my surgeon was Mr Shepherd. I believe Mr Cronin is a colleague of Mr Shepherd (& very young if my memory serves me right)!

I can't re-iterate enough the importance of the exercises, even when you feel they are doing nothing, inside they are working your muscles slowly. I went to my own Physio a couple of times after my op & she stressed how important they were. I was also told not to sit for longer than an hour & to keep getting up. I was determined to be walking my dog by week 2 (only up & down the road) so i had my little goals to aim for. Try & watch yourself in a mirror when you practice walking to make sure you are doing it correctly & remember to do it really slowly. I never had a numb feeling but my swelling never came out until week 2. Perhaps it's a circulation problem? You should have a telephone number for the hospital in your discharge paperwork - perhaps give them a call to put your mind at rest. Have you had your stitches/staples out yet? X

Your,re quite right he is very young! I have heard of mr.shepherd also. I think maybe I,ll do abit of googling and try to find a physio just for reassurance if nothing else, but I will make sure I walk regularly at home in the meantime! No, this numb feeling only started yesterday, in both legs and arms, googling it it says it is nerve damage which is a worry! And yes you are right I was given the ward number if worried about anything so might just ring tomorrow. Having dressing removed Thursday so hopefully all healed x

Hi Angel, are you still getting the numbness? Mention it when you have your dressing removed tomorrow. Also, ring the hospital if you haven't already. I found all the staff there to be extremely helpful & kind x

Hi Fernlady yes I'd thought of that, I,ll speak to the surgery about it tomorrow, it hasn't been so bad today just tingling in my fingers, but if no joy I'll ring Nuffield! I guess I just think 'it,ll go' thank you for your concern smile x
