Who are the 'Specialists' regarding Peri/Menopause that they keep talking about in the UK Press??

Posted , 12 users are following.

Sorry girls, but I've just read the Daily Mail online (UK) and they've got a big article on how to' breeze' through the Menopause with articles running today and all of next week.

Great!  We have someone in the Press on our side, at last.  But hold on a minute, who are these 'Specialists' they refer to, who 'are urging......' us ladies?

As far as I'm concerned, to get to a Specialist in the UK you have to have some pretty major underlying problems to get referred to any specialist, let alone a Gynechologist specialising in all-things Peri/Meno!!

No doubt if you are happy to pay privately, you can see ANYONE to discuss ANY health issue:  just most people don't have the money for this.

But more to the point: to see a Specialist you have to get a referral through a GP: there lies the problem. I'm sure there are many women on this forum who would agreed most know very little about this age-old phenomenon (been around as long as we've been around!) and treat it somewhat like a taboo.

I for one will be reading these artiles with interest.  There's articles on HRT, research from the US, things we can take to help ourselves and, wait for it, even the perfect 'Menopause' Diet for us too!

We should feel totally indebted to the Daily Mail for highlighting this terrible, disgusting 'disease' ha, ha, ha!!!

No doubt I'll be reporting back next week with something to say about it. All I'll say today is: Specialists - huh!  And lentils, tofu, miso - not for me talol

I've not seen the article but going to track it down! :-) I have a great doctor but I do think a lot of the time if you mention any aches pains tiredness etc etc etc it just gets blamed on the menopause and that's it, I've never had a proper conversation with anyone re menopause other than being told if it gets too much have HRT!

Same Tracky. And if you mention menopause or read anything about menopause, it always talks about hot flushes, as if that is the only symptom you get with menopause. I know it is a major one and really difficult, but a lot of us are getting problems with so many more things.

    Hi Shaznay

I'm with you on this one....being in sunny Australia, I can't speak to the medicos over there other than what I see from A& E programme, but not sure that is a reliable source Or accurate picture of UK health system.

I do however read the dailymail Uk daily and know exactly what you mean. One week, some or other diet is the new best thing, the following week another diet that claims the exact opposite.

Then there are those articles where red wine or coffee health benefits are lauded and the following week bashed as causing "potentially" terminal illnesses like strokes or altzheimers....

From my humble Aussie perspective, I do find lady Gp's very knowledgeable and helpful. Forget the men! I made the mistake of seeing a male dr on Monday last week and he was awful, wanted to prescribe an antidepressant for my perimenopause symptoms....Rejected his advice and saw a lady doctor the following day and hip hip hooray she said the "perimenopause" word and blood tests to follow in 2 weeks. I must give a shout out to the Aussie medical system....My experience of the medical system, referral to specialists etc has always been excelent. Except for women's issues, the proviso is go and see a woman or female gynae. I made the mistake of seeing a highly recommended male gynae 2 years ago and mentioned perimenopause and he reacted as if I had used a swear word! Really? I swore then, pun intended to only see women doctor's for us gal plumbing issues and so far so good, well except for that blip last Monday (and that was only cos my regular GP has inconveniently gone overseas).

I see the lady Gp again after blood tests and she was going to give me info on HRT and other options and I will let you gals know what she says. She attended a medical conference last week about HRT and a new study about HRT for over 50's being safe and not as risky as previously thought... but will update in 2 weeks.

One of my sisters lives in Sydney. The healthy one who did her Peri/Meno 'natural'. She had the cheek to moan that she's put on 'heaps' of weight: now weighing just under 9st!!! She got such sympathy from her 3 fat, ugly sisters back in the UK: welcome to our world 'sis!!! Tee Hee....:-)

Seriously, I get the impression she's very happy with the level of healthcare she pays for: there lies the answer - pay for what you use

Yep, our NHS is wonderful at A&E level - goes Belly Up the minute you leave the bed.....in the corridor of the bursting-at-th-seams A&E Dept or back of the over-spill ambulance!!!!sad

      Happy reading

    Hiya

Tried to find Monday's article online but was unable to (or was I just having a major Peri/bad 'Tablet' day? Any others not able to view this online either??).

I suppose it should be said I'm a tight cow so wouldn't have even considered buying the paper version whilst shopping yesterday.  I can't be doing with the page-upon-page of advertising - which seems to be dominated by mobility scooters, help in/out baths, chuck-you-out recliner chairs!  Christ its bad enough feeling crap, let alone seeing what's in store in 'God's Waiting Room'!!!

Anyways, I digress........ I did manage to read Tuesday's article today.

Oh My!  Talk about pro-HRT!!  I lost count of how many times 'oestrogen' was printed, and it would appear that without it, the world and his wife will shrivel up and die!!Progesterone, in stark contrast got very little mention.

Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely not anti-HRT, far from it. I'm just not sure that I'm ready for it just yet.

But what was interesting - if not just for us 'women of age' , but to men and definitely younger women - was how so many symptoms that we, the initiated, are really aware of, but may come as a total shock to the 'uneducated'!!smile

It was good to read about the  dental issues, although I was aware of this to a degree, and 'bad breath' in particular.  I was convinced that bear in the wood has lost his way most mornings!!  Even this morning I was aware that mine was awful (thought that issue went away when I had my sinus op!).  Relieved in a way that my personal 'flame-thrower' is somewhat excuseable!

After looking at the myriad of things that I was aware of, and some newbees, I'm convinced that evolution got it right: we are just meant to look fat, unattractive, sagging in every conceived place, drying up in all others, hairless, toothless, (with bad breath to boot!) with no interest in sex, so that we just automatically moved over to let the young chicks get on with the breeding!  It all makes total sense.

I wonder if any of you have had the pleasure of watching the 'Croods' kidss DVD??  Well if you have, I envisage myself to look like the Grandma any day soon. But alas, according to my Grandson, there's already a striking resemblance!! (you'll have to Google it:  she's a Dolllol!)

Good that Peri/Menopausal issues are being addressed so broadly. That can only be good - right?  I'm sure, in the not too distant future it will be a recognised 'disability' - well if they're trying to convince us obesity is, then there's hope for us all!

Greetings from the Fat, Ugly, Sagging, Crumbling One...... with Bad Breathlol!!

      Hiya Sx,

Not sure I would say the article was pro HRT, did you see the video at bottom? Excellent. Wish I could find a doctor like her here in my area! Very educated in our matters.

It does explain the natural decline, but if I understood, and I could be wrong, but after the hormones are done dancing around and level off, things stop being so bizarre. We may not be the spring chicks we used to be but the really awful symptoms seem to go away. At least that's kind of what I took away from the article. One can only hope.

Do watch the video of the doctor at the end. Loved her.

Have a nice day and hope all is well with you!

Did try, but that bloody Tablet got the better of me this morning - wouldn't play it.  Football's on TV tonight, so I'll have a look at it on the desktop tonight.

      Hi annie

Just managed to watch the vid, and agree with you:  she's great.  (Tried to check her out on Wiki but she wasn't there:  I wanted to know how old she was as she had such lovely skin, ha, ha.  Probably all due to her own nutritional regime,no doubt!).

Yep agree too, she's hardly pro-HRT, but the written article was a bit 'pump and promote'.  Might be because women in the UK have been scared off taking it with the cancer/heart attack/stroke threat???

Might see if I can have a look at her book, although I'm not into buying loads of books on this subject as they'll probably bamboozle me with their contradictory advice!!

Why can't we all have a Dr Marilyn in our GP surgery??

Hi Shaznay, yes she does have some really good advice in her books, but I agree, she does promote herself and her natural products a lot in the books so I kind of skim over those bits. It's good sound advice she gives but could do without the sales pitch! X
