Will I get confirmation of my hysterectomy date?

I have never had an operation before, so I don't know how things work. Last week, I decided that I wnated to have a hysterectomy and called the oncological nurse who is dealing with my case. Another nurse picked up the call and said she confirmed my hysterectomy date of 20 April in the gyn/oncologist's calender,.

She told me that I would be asked to attend a pre-operative consultation 7 to 10 days before the actual operation, but I would like to know if I will be receiving written confirmation from the NHS beforehand, so that I can be sure the operation was actually scheduled and not have to worry about a computer error. I am self-employed and have already told my clients about my upcoming operation and they are preparing for my absence.

They normally send written confirmation out so if you have not received one within a week , I would ring back & ask them .x

You would normally get one if on a waiting list but you well within your rights to ask for it to be confirmed in writing if sorted over phone. It may already be on the way. You should have one for pre op as you Dont know this date yet plus it will tell you want to bring etc. Each hospital is slightly different but call until you get answers you want! Good luck smile

Thanks. I am not on a waiting list. I am supposed to have a definite surgery date as I have a fibroid that is possibly cancerous. I will call back if I don't get a letter soon. I am just anxious.

Yes, I agree with the others.  You will get a letter confirming the date and advising you of admittance and the length of time you need to fast for etc.

My consultant wrote my operation date in his diary when I saw him in Jan.My date is for April 7th and I got a confirmation within a month from the admissions depart.I had my pre op in Jan following  the appointment with my consultant as you can have in up to 3 months before and just turn up at the department.I was given the enhanced recovery plan booklet and the preload that I have to take before.I now have to wait for the phone call on April 2nd to let me know what time I have to be at the hospital on the day.

    Good luck

I spoke to the oncology nurse and it turns out I do not get a confirmation notice. (I confirmed the date with her to be sure.) The next time I get a letter, it will be for the appointment for my pre-op assessment. I guess as the date is already definite, it would be a waste of paper and postage to send me something in writing.
