Work and sickness

I’m on my fifth day of having a horrible cold.  At my job, we earn sick time.  I try very hard not to abuse it.  When I had surgery last year, I had to use four weeks of it.  I’m always worried now about running out, that something bad will happen and it will all be gone.  The cold started Saturday and I stayed home Monday.  I went part of Tuesday and most of today to work, even though I am clearly sick.  I’ve had a few coworkers at this same place over the years who ran out of sick time due to major illnesses and really had rough times with management.  Any of you ladies struggling with this?  I know there are lots of jobs that don’t offer sick time at all.  Any experiences and advice would help so much.

Hi Liz, I don't know how you do it... I couldn't work outside of my home going thru peri , symptoms are just too too bad! So I now work from home with my very small online business that I can't even do that half the time, but the good thing is when I can't then I dont, and when I can then it keeps me busy and then I do... Well with that said I feel for you, I'm just getting over to weeks of this flu sore throat laryngitis crap myself was awful!!!! But when I did work outside the home and I got sick, and I was worried about my sick days, or then not excusing me, I would go to the doctor or the emergency room and upon leaving I would have the nurse write me a note to excuse me.. Hope this helps, and hope you feel better soon...

Thanks, Gypsy... and I’m sorry you’ve been so sick.  Since I went to work, my manager knows I’m sick this time.  It bothers me that I thought I had to go at all.  They are weird about sick time.  My coworkers get mad when someone comes in sick, yet they do it, too.  It is almost like a kind of martyrdom.  It doesn’t do any of us any good.  I’ve thought about trying to start a little business of my own but don’t think I would do very well.  I hope not to need the doctor this time but will get a note if I do.  Take care and  feel better.

7 days off for the flu is vital.

The more people will do this, the less the management is going to be able to do about it! It is time we realize we work to live, and not the other way round!

I agree and did take another day off.  It was a cold and not the flu, thank goodness.  Hard to manage all this with the peri.
