Worried about my Aches & Pains

I am the wrong side of 60 and have been taking 10 & 20 mg doses of Simvastatin for a few years now. Level at last BT was about 4. So although that is fine I cannot shift these pains. I now get woken up by pains in both my hips and legs that are gradualy getting worse. My feet and knees are hurting and my back is invariably stiff. I feel like an old woman creaking about when I rise from a seated position, legs aching etc = and dont think I should really. Having read all of the posts I think I too will try a 2 week break to see if these symptoms get better or not. I walk my dogs twice daily for about 4 hrs in total so do get plenty of fresh air and exercise. I would be interested to know if anyone else has had similar symptoms? :x

I don't think my response to your posting re simvastatin will be informative for you but felt I should say that the aches and pains you describe are those that I have experienced after 7 months of 40mg daily Lipitor (as well as additional giddyness) and this despite my cholestorol and other levels being good. I spoke to my GP who put me on Simvastatin. I lost my discomfort overnight and feel so much less tired on a daily basis. I am hoping this will continue. I also take 150mg dispersible Aspirin daily.

The point perhaps is that it seems we are all suited to different drugs. After my experience I could not recommend Lipitor but there are people on it who seem comfortable. I would be very interested to know if a two week break in your case sees you achieve some relief. Best of luck 'Old gal' !

Well - here we are 3 weeks in after I stopped the Simvastatin 20mg daily dose. I now confirm that the pains I was experiencing at night in both hips has disappeared. Of course, I cannot say for sure if this is as a result of stopping the tablets but feel certain there is a link. I intend to leave off the tabs for another 2/3 weeks. I will then start them again and if the problem returns I will visit my GP for a consultation as to where I go from there. There is still some backache discomfort and general aches and pains but I feel things are improving. We shall see. Bluejay - glad things have improved for you after changing medication by the way...Let's hope it continues.

I have been on Atorvastatin for 2 years following a heart attack - 80mg for the 1st twelve months and 40 mg since I have suffered the same problems as \"old gal\" and six weeks ago stopped taking them to see what would happen. This morning I went for a medical and all functions were excellent including cholesteral at 3.8 my problem is do I go on to simvastation or anything else. I do go to the gym three times a week so get plenty of exercise - I am 74

Well here we are in May. Nothing has improved, just getting worse?? Following a blood test after leaving off the Simvastatins, cholesterol has increased to 7.4 which is a worry. Pains in my legs did briefly get better after leaving the pills off but with doctors advice have started taking 40 mg per day now. But my aches and pains are back with a vengance. It is so difficult to get comfortable at night. It disturbs my OH as well. Hips, feet, knees calves - all giving me problems but now also my legs are feeling like lead weights sometimes when walking...I have had back problems too. What to do? I am so tempted to stop taking these pills and try being very strict with my diet as the doctors just do not seem to be bothered...I am 62 but feel like 82..Just getting up out of a chair is really difficult...This cant go on...From what stories I have read on here, I should go back to the doctors and discuss my health issues and try to sort out my life before it gets worse...Am at my wits end...

Oldgal - you simply have to stop taking the tablets. Perhaps a different type of statin may be better for you. But you must not continue putting up with the agony of these pills. I just have the severe pain in my right leg, but that's enough for me. I am definately not taking any more after reading all these posts. The pills must be attributable. The pain still hasn't gone and I haven't had any for a week! When is it going to stop???

If your doctor just insists on you taking the same tablets you must ask for a second opinion - go to a different surgery if necessary. Good luck!
