Worried about my eyes

Since having a cataract removed two months ago, I am unable to read for long before my eyes get very tired and sore.  There is no blurriness, however, just an inability to focus properly on the print.  Reading is no longer a pleasure.  Also, I definitely seem to have more lines around my eyes andI haven't worn any eye makeup since the op. The very thought of it is just too painful.   I have done everything I was supposed to do including using the eyedrops, etc.,

but am still worried about my eyesight.  I have been back to the Eye clinic and the doctor there referred me to a Retina specialist who I am due to see shortly.  I know most cataract operatons are successful and am very concerned that mine wasn't.  Would just like to be able to see as well as before.  Optician confirms my vision is much worse and there is nothing he can do to improve matters. Doctor at the eye hospital who has referred me to a Retina consultant thinks i will need to have another op. Has anyone else had this proble? Please let me know.  Thanks.

Incidentally, I went back because of soreness, brightness, watering of the eyes and general discomfort experienced.  What questions should I be asking the Retina doctor.

It seems your vision is clearer if you see more lines around your eyes!  You will require refraction to see better at near and distance - it is possible you have astigmatism from the cornea or a retinal problem or low grade uveitis...

If your vision does not improve then an OCT scan will prove or disprove "cystoid macular oedema" that can and should be treated, if it is present.

Depending on the prescription in the other eye you may have "spectacle imbalance" but if that was the case your optometrist would have explained.

Dry eye syndrome is very common after cataract surgery and can cause blurriness, irritation and watering. Worth trying a gel lubricant like Viscotears or Genteal from a pharmacy.

      Hi Robert,

Thanks for your reply. Interesting point about my vision being clearer if I think I can see more lines around my eyes!  Have seen Retina doc today who advises that the cataract removal WAS successful - it's just that I have a membrane which needs to be removed.  He suggests either an operation to remove the membrane on my right eye before having the left eye done but that this will take longer for my sight balance to be restored, or I can opt to have the cataract removed from my left eye first and then have the membrane removed from my right eye.  Must admit I was quite impressed with him, particularly as he said I might want to get another opinion, Has given me a further appointment next week to let him know my decision.  I did tell him I didn't have much confidence in them now that my vision was worse than before but I have to get something done.  I can't go on like this.

      What do you think?

It is odd your vision is worse after cataract surgery. I presume macular oedema has been excluded by OCT scan.  An epiretinal membrane can progress and grow thicker in time and also contract to cause "pucker" or wrinkling of the retina which makes for visual distortion.  A vitrectomy and "membrane peel" can help to straighten the wrinkling. Whether it improves your visual acuity is less certain.  There are no hard and fast rules.  Cataract surgery usually improves vision quickly hence his suggestion of doing cataract surgery in your second eye if you are keen for better vision soon.  The vision in the first eye is unlikely to improve without further surgery and may get worse.  Seems you will be having further surgery one way or another.  Good luck.

      Hi,

After discussing situation with family, have decided to have the creased membrane removed .Going to let Retina doc know on Friday morning -

Don't know when it will be done.  Soon, I hope. Will have other eye done if vision comes back, eventually, in this eye!  No guarantee I know but reluctant to have other eye done until success with this one.  Still have quedstions to ask the doc but am going ahead with removal of membrane.  (Caution on left eye cataract is because my Dad had both eyes done (different hospital) years ago and was virtually blind afterwards.)

      Anyway, thanks for your interest.

      Kind regards.

Hi... (don't know if you mail or female?)

Sorry to hear you are having problems. I had cataract removed from my left eye on 11th March this year. I had a few problems before but most have gone. I am now left with seeing a few blobs! I Had my eyes tested last week and he tells me he can see that some of the gel from back of eye (which sometimes get disturbed) has stuck to the front of my lens. The hospital had already checked for detached retiner and said all in place. They tell me it may mean I need a quick laser treatment to make a hole in the gel? I know everything is brighter so the lens works. Re seeing your lines more...I can too! I think this is that even if you can not see as well as you should at this time you will see things brighter so lines will show up more to you! I have an appointment on July 1st as they hope the gel may drop to bottom of eye? Problem is my old reading glasses are bodged up as broken and need glasses now as going on holiday next week and then to a wedding in USA in June. I am collecting new ones tomorrow but will probably need them changed or another pair if I can see better with the laser? Hope you get better news from appontment to explain why this is happening for you. It could be something they can correct easily. Let us know how you get on. My eye still water a bit and get tried etc if I am on laptop too long. Good luck.

sorry i haven't replied earlier but i somehow missed your comment. Hope you enjoyed your holiday.

My sight is still the same at present but going to have the membrane peel soon so hopefully will then be able to see better.  Hope so anyway.  Still, reading of other peoples problems on this site, I realise I've been quite lucky.

      Goo00d luck to you anyway.

I sure hate to write you about my cataract surgery but I might get some answers, once I told people I needed cataracts removed I was so surprised at the answers i got from at least a dozen people who had it or knew someone who did and it all was good.  I live in a small town high in the mountains and only a few Dr's. available and I heard nothing but raves about my Dr.  So I was all ready to have the same results, but I did not I went from not wearing glasses to needed glasses for everything.  I have had nothing but problems with my eyes that I never experienced before.  Very blurry all the time and I also have flickering (like my eye moves rapidly), my eyes also get tired very fast,  I have been back to my Dr's one is local the other is 2 hrs away, they are both saying I have a decease and it might be Macular Degeneration.  I am 75 and have been an artist all my adult life it is my life I love every minute I paint, now I can only paint short periods at a time and it is very hard for me. I have been going to the eye Dr. for years for ck ups and am wondering why oh why they never saw that I had a decease, I did ask them and they said the same thing the surgery revealed it, which I do not believe they are protecting themselves.  I see another eye specialist tomerrow.

I'm an artist myself and sure feel your pain!  I hope you get the answers you seek on your next appointment! I too need glasses for everything Near, at least that involving my work and am in the process of getting second opinions to see what can be done.  I wish you the best and please let us know what happens in your subsequent appointments.

Thank you for your concern, I did see the specilist and he said I do not have MD but do have another eye decease called BEST it has to do with the retina they have to do laser surgery tomerrow for a tare they found in my right eye, they have to do surgery right away before the tare gets bigger.  I will ask him again about the blurriness sometimes it is really bad.
