My dad has had chronic pancreatitis ,diabetes, hernia and gallstones for 7 years now he's always in pain. But at the moment his gallstones are causing him unbearable pain they say they won't operate unless it's last resort I'm rearly worried about him

Have they not given a valid reason why they won’t do surgery to remove the gallbladder? This would most defiantly relieve quite a lot of the pain and sickness.  Personally I would seek a second opinion tbh!

It’s bad enough pancreatitis, but gallbladder pain too!!!

Hope you get some success for your dad soon x

They have just said that it would only be done if it was an emergency and he might not come out the other side he's only 60. He had those cysts on he pancreas at on one stage and they said he pancreas had reduced in size would that be a reason why they wouldn't operate

Is your dad seeing an actual pancreas specialist and not a GI specialist? To be honest it doesn’t sound right. The pancreas will shrink with pancreatitis, that’s part of the condition. Is he on digestive enzymes? As for the pancreas cysts sometimes they don’t do anything for them because of their location but they watch them closely. If they get big enough then they try and do other procedures. As for the gallbladder stones that makes no sense. I haven’t heard of anyone who had stones and didn’t have their gallbladder removed but everyone is different.

Maybe it’s the hernia that is preventing surgery … something doesn’t add up. Do you go to the appointments with your dad? I would go and ask the pancreas specialist why they haven’t performed an ERCP to remove the stones and also inquire about digestive enzymes if your dad isn’t on them. His pancreas isn’t producing the enzymes it once did, so his food isn’t being digested like it was before. That will have an effect on his pain. Stay away from Aspirin but Tylenol will help. Also oranges help with inflammation (if his stomach can handle it). With pancreas problems we have to stick to a low fat and sugar diet. If he’s having pain then he shouldn’t eat for a couple days. He should rest his pancreas and stick to clear liquids. Heat packs on the abdomen will also help with pain. I would start a list of questions for the doctor and go with your dad.

Yes he's on the enzymes medication to help break down his food he eats quite well now compared to years ago. He attends diabetic clinic his sugars can be all over place he takes insulin hard to regulate . My sister and I are attending his next appointment with him and we have already started a list of questions to ask just hard to watch. When he got diagnosed with pancreatitis he ended up in intensive care he was in pretty awful state. Just wish I new what to do to help. But I am going to say to him about oranges.

I had gallstones and they removed my gallbladder (this was before I knew I had pancreatitis). Gallstones can create an inflamed gallbladder so I definitely would seek a second opinion. Dealing with pancreatitis is bad enough, he shouldn’t have the gallbladder problems on top of it.
