Your Patient Journey (tell me about the professionals involved in your care)

Hi all

I am a student working in a gynaecology theatre, as a part of my course at university I will need to talk about the healthcare professionals that patients come in contact with before their surgical procedure.

If anyone who has previously had a hysterectomy (abdominal or vaginal or laparoscopic) could please tell me about their journey this would really help.

Please tell me about:

Your symptoms

Whether you were referred to a Gynaecologist from you GP

What healthcare professionals you saw prior to your surgery, for example, for scans (ultrasound/x-ray), nurses involved in your care and any other specialist that were there along your journey.

Please tell me if you were admitted to a ward before your sugery and what professionals you came into contact with on the ward.

Your help is greatly appreciated

Many thanks smile

I was finally referred to the PMB clinic by my GP after several months of bleeding and losing clots and asking for a referral.

In Oct last year I saw the nurse specalist who tried to do a hysterscopy but due to the fact I had started to bleed she was unable to do it, so I had to go and have it under G/A, I had a lovely group of theatre workers and a lovely aneasethist who offered me a spinal block as I did not want a G/A and my consultant made me feel at ease.

On 5th Nov I had an appt with another consultant, who gave me the news I had endrometrial cancer, He gave me the choice of a TAH and removal of ovaries or radiotherapy. I chose the TAH, which he had already scheduled for 11th Nov.

I was not admitted to a ward beforehand but to an admissions unit. On my journey before the op, I met clinical nurse specailists, anaesethists and 2 consultants. Today I am 10 week post op

      you are welcome

I only had 5 days to prepare myself from diagnosis to the op, I was given some literature to read and it was only at 4pm the day before that a nurse practitioner actually spoke to me about the op and she was as good as her word and visited me the following morning before I went to theatre.    I had a fear of not getting through the op and my consultant was understanding as was the aneathesetist, who was the same one who was with me for my hystoscopy.....

      Hi.

there wasnt so much physical or psychological prep done by a third party, the nurse doing the endocrinology had a long chat about the hysterectomy and checked I fully understood what it was about.

I prepped myself, ate well and kept fit prior to op.

Emotionally to be honest I was hit hard after, wasnt to prepared how I would feel.this site and chatting to people who really know how it feels was helpful beyond words

After 3 weeks of almost constant bleeding (clots as well as flooding) I went to GP had bloods taken Haemalobin down to 6.4, offered transfusion but opted for Ferrous Fumerate tds, was referred to gyny and had first a Trans vaginal ultrasound then an endometrial biopsy which indicated that I had a grade 1A endometrial cancer, saw another gynacologist who specialised in familial  gyny cancers (first one didn't operate if cancer present), I was booked in for surgery 2 weeks later, on the ward I was admitted by the ward sister, the Anaesthetist came and spoke to me and also my Gynacologist and the on-call registrar.

I had a Laparoscopically Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy 5 weeks ago yesterday.

I should add that I was also diagnosed with uterine polyps 15 years prior to all of this.

Hi Pheobe, thank you for your reply, if you dont mind, could you tell me how were you pyhsically and psychologically prepared for this procedure?

If you mean did any health-care professionals ask me how I felt about it all then they didn't really, I was asked on numerous occasions if I had any questions and was given literature to read but that was it, I did my own research and was helped enormously by the ladies on this website.

i started with all my problems 3 years ago when i had my youngest son.. bleeding all the time alot of pain.. went to see my GP told me to see how things go and come back in 3 months.. so i did that second time round after 3 months saw a women doctor at my doctors she was more understanding i was sent for a scan and my results came back and had to have a few things burnt from my womb.. things where fine for a month.. then started back up again.. got to this time round that my blood was working like glue so sticking things to eachother.. had to have more things burnt away.. good again for a month.. then i was told to go on the DEPO injection so i did for a year but every 12th week i would bleed so i had it every 11 weeks things where good but then it stopped working.. in all this time i saw the 2nd GP all the time as she understood more.. Also saw my consultant at the hospital or a member of his team.. last time i saw my consultant they agreed to do the hysterectomy and it was all booked for 11th nov 2014.. before the op no one came and spoke to me.. i got a booklet to read and that was it.. when admitted i was just left to wait for my turn.. i would say my hospital wasnt the best.. all the nurses that looked after me where great. Hope this help you.

I had many years of gynae problems and as they didn't want to do a hysterectomy I was subjected to many procedures. Some of which were successful others not.

Had menopause and all seemed ok. Had some bleeding and Dr sent me for ultra sound. They tried hystocopsy but failed when awake and asleep. Did mri. Womb large bulky and stuck together so they couldn't see inside. Decided on hysterectomy. Had that week before last. Abdominal cut and staples. Did have complications from a previous abdominal op also.

    Had leaflets given beforehand.

Didn't have any advice given after.

Sent home day 2 with bag of drugs.

Haven't been told any exercises or when to do whatever. Suppose it might be in original leaflet.

    Had spinal and other anaesthetic.

No privacy in hospital. In bay with 3 others and the privacy extent is to pull

Curtain hence nosey co patients seemed to know all my business and made more assumptions.
