The top five ways to stay active

Maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle can seem difficult, especially when it feels like there aren't enough hours in the day. Research [1] estimates 80 per cent of UK adults aren't meeting the government's target of exercising 12 times in a four-week period.

Fitting exercise into your everyday routine might be easier than you think - and in many cases cheaper and more enjoyable.

Here are five top tips to help you be more active in your day-to-day life.

1. Walk more

Walking is a great way to stay active, and can easily be factored into your day. Whether it's taking the dog out or going for a stroll with a friend, walking can be more than just a means of getting from A to B. If you do need to use transport, get off the bus a stop earlier or park your car a bit further away from your destination. It all adds up!

2. Join a club

If you are not used to exercising, it might be worthwhile joining a fitness club. Why not get a friend to go with you for extra motivation? There will be a range of levels to choose from, so be sure to select a club or class that's designed for beginners.

3. Treat housework like exercise

Housework doesn't just have to just be a chore. If you are cutting the grass or cleaning the windows, then they count as exercise. Spending 20 minutes doing housework can burn around 100 calories.

4. Use the stairs

Taking the stairs instead of the lift will help tone your legs and improve cardiovascular fitness. In fact, it will burn more calories per minute than going for a jog!

5. Work out for less

If you don't have time to fit in an hour at the gym, then short bursts of exercise could be just as effective. Try doing sit-ups in the morning, planking when you are watching TV and running on the spot while cooking dinner.
