The Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF) was established as a registered charity in the UK in 1998 by people with a personal interest in diabetes. DRWF has three distinct aims: to finance vital research into diabetes; to raise awareness to this increasingly prevalent condition and to support people with diabetes through the Diabetes Wellness Network.
Whilst funding vital diabetes research, DRWF works to raise awareness to diabetes, its causes, treatments and complications and provides ongoing educational support to enable those living with the condition, to self-manage effectively.
The charity's strapline of 'Staying well until a cure is found...' states the fundamental principle behind the Diabetes Wellness Network. Subscribing members of the network receive the monthly publication 'The Diabetes Wellness News', through which they access professional medical advice; practical tips to improve understanding and self-management skills; news of recent advancements in research and information relating to products and services available to people with diabetes. Network members further receive a quarterly good health pocket diary to encourage a pro-active approach to self-care.
The charity organises an annual programme of educational Diabetes Wellness events each year which are open to all. However, members of the network enjoy discounted rates for attendance of residential activites. These events are aimed at providing an opportunity for people with diabetes to meet like-minded people, sharing the same health concerns. They provide a full programme of educational sessions, facilitated by diabetes and other healthcare professionals, in a relaxed and unhurried environment. They are fun and relaxed and a great environment in which to learn more about successful management of diabetes.
DRWF produces a range of patient information leaflets covering all aspects of diabetes related health. All of which are distributed free of charge and are available for download from the charity website in both print and audio format. In order that people with diabetes carry emergency identification, the charity distributes Diabetes Awareness Necklaces, free of charge, on request.
