3 year old has HSP

Hi all.

My son was diagnosed with HSP 3 weeks ago after his leg started to swell and he came out in a rash.

He was doing well until last week when he ended up in hospital with dehydration due to diarrhea and vomiting. He was put on IV fluids and antibiotics for 5 days and is now back home.

He then had 5 days symptom-free until yesterday when the stomach pain started. He then had bloody diarrhea from 7pm until 2am but since then he's been fine! Keeping him hydrated and giving Calpol for the pain (though that seems to have settled now) but the rash is coming up like hives on his arms.

Does this all sound typical of HSP? He had his blood pressure and urine check on Thursday, both were fine. But other than that we have no support. Even harder on weekends as the GP surgery is closed.

He's quite happy in himself but just don't know where else to get advice!

Thanks x

speak to your consultant as soon as you can and make sure he is able to take any medications that have been prescribed. if he is vomiting them up that might be worth taking him to a and e.

one thing that helped me is the autoimmune protocol diet. it calmed my symptoms alongside the meds and made me feel healthy again. might be worth a google. if nothing else it has nice healthy recipes for your family.

good luck and i hope he is feeling better soon.

hi! so sorry youre going through this! my daughter got hsp when she was 5. She had the rash a weird swelling all over. then one morning she started vomitting blood. Her HSP cause her to have intusseception. she had to have 28 cm of her small intestine removed. keep a watchful eye on that tummy pain. now she is a happy, healthy 8 year old. we will pray for your baby!

The good news is that since he is a child his prognosis is good! There is currently no "cure" for HSP but there are medications and ways to help your son feel better and possibly decrease worsening of symptoms. Only blood test and skin biopsy would prove HSP (other than clinical presentation). If your insurace covers Online Medical consults you can take advantage of that during weekends. I hope he feels better!

Yes these are the exact same symptoms I had. Sounds just like HSP. Constant stomach pain & bloody diarrhea . Watch for blood in the urine. Remember children do not always know how to explain what is wrong with them or how they feel. So monitor him regularly. Do not hesitate to take him to a specialist or childrens hospital to make sure he gets the proper care. Best of luck.
