Also, I still do not have a fistula yet. Can I avoid in getting one if my father is a good canditate? How long is the process to find out if he is a good canditate.?

    Hi Joel

Only you kidney doctor can give you the authoritative answer.  My partner is undergoing the donor compatibility screening now and even though there are lots of tests, none are what you'd call arduous.  My doctor did say if all goes well I may not need to go on dialysis and have the transplant.

You doctor can start the ball rolling and if the initial boxes are being ticked than your dad wll need to have a different kdney doctor.  My specialist doesn't do dialysis until gfr is 10, so you have plenty of time.  Good luck

    Hi Joel

I'm a 71 year old grandmother who donated a kidney to my son in law 3 months ago without him being on dialysis.

It took 2 and a half years to happen from the time I had a compatability test as I had to loose a few kilos in weight and the 46 year old reached the transplant function level required.  I'm quite fit and have no health issues so I recovered very quickly.  Son in Law is progressing well after a month of ups and downs.

Good luck for you and your Dad.

Hello. I am new to the forum. I am from the USA but I was looking for a support group online and this came up.

Ok, my doctor said it is preferable for the person to be closer in age but if your dad is a match and is in good health it is better to have him donate then wait on the cadavor list. My wait time would of been 6 years!

My transplant is schedule for next month! I am doing a paired exchange.

Best of luck Holly.  Do expect ups and downs for a while after the transplant as it seems to take a while to adjust the anti-rejection drugs etc.

Thanks Jill! I have suffered a lot of complications in the last year. I also went from stage 4 to stage 5 so I am not surprised. I have just been trying to take the best care of myself as I can. It can be hard sometimes but I gotta do what I gotta do.

I've had kidney disease for a long time. So this is very exciting and I cannot wait to move on! I am so grateful for my cousin. I always tell her now she is my favorite. (I have a lot cousins).
