Anyone have issues with painful areola?

I've noticed that one of my areolas is sensitive and painful to the touch. Feels like it's been cut, but I'm not seeing any cuts, I'm not feeling any lumps/bumps, there is no discharge, or any change to how it looks. Sometimes it feels tingly, too. I'm 48 and I've never been pregnant or breastfed. I've searched around online to which it could be, but everything shows up about the breast or nipple, never the areola. And, always talks about women who breastfeed having issues. Of course, having it looked at/radiographs are always suggested, but wondering if others have had this experience.
Thanks!
