Are vaccines safe if you have hsp?

My daughter had been diagnosed with HSP - Henoch Schonlein Purpura and she is due to have her Tetanus, Diptheria and Polio vaccine (Td/IPV) and Meningitis group ACWY (Men ACWY). Will she still be ok to have these??

Many thanks

Hi, I would definitely ask her Pediatrician. If the Pediatrician is not familiar with HSP then ask someone who is. Even if by phone or email. Please let me know what you find out. This has never occured to me , yet it is a very thought provoking. Im sure others would benefit from your research as well. Thanks!

    Hi

I'm guessing your daughter is in her teens?

My Son was due to have these in year 10 (age 15) but the hospital said not to have them whilst the HSP was newly diagnosed and troublesome at the time. He had them a year later. All vaccinations MUST be dead vaccines. This one is but you might want to get that confirmation yourself. She should have flu vaccine too and again it has got to be the dead vaccine and definitely not the live one. My Son also was given a pneumonia which lasts for 10 years.

Hope this helps and your daughter quickly recovers. Unfortunately for my Son after 2 and a half years now HSP is still lingering.

Do get advice from an expert in HSP. My daughter's HSP was triggered by a Hepatitis B vaccination (she was aged 19) so she has been advised to never have another vaccine (including the flu). She had all her childhood vaccines and was fine after those. She is now 3.5 years with active HSP although on no medication and although regular flares they are much milder. Best of luck - this disease is so different for everyone.

Hi! I developed HSP shortly following the HPV jab too, however at the time didn’t even realise the link. I know I didn’t have any other sort of infection to have triggered it,  it’s just later on in life I realised that that was the only change at the time.

I was severely ill for a long time with HSP, it interfered with my life massively and I couldn’t recover from it, in the end I was referred to great Ormand street hospital as my symptoms were very severe and on going as I had been poorly for at least 3/4 months. In the end great ormand Street specialists prescribed me some medication to control the symptoms and I was on that medication for at least a year with regular check ups. They saw me every 6 months afterwards untill I was 18 as I never fully recovered and have it in a ‘chronic’ form with relapses.

I wanted to know, moving forward what you would do regarding vaccinations?

I’m now 22 and expecting a baby, and after my experience I’m so frightened to vaccinate my child.

Ive read so many stories about baby’s having bad reactions to vaccines and becoming fatally ill, and knowing how ill I became too, it’s made me really nervous.

I’m also a little concerned to have the whooping cough vaccine that I’ve been told to have as I still do have HSP.
