Very few survive bacterial meningitis, alas. It particularly hit the very young and elderly.

Viral meningitis is very survivable - i've had it countless times (maybe 30+). In my case, it's underlying disease is Behcet's syndrome - a sort of systemic vasculitis. Although I had my first meningitis at age 18, then next wasn't until I was shy of age 40. The diagnosis wasn't found until 2010.

    Hope this helps!
