Bilateral submandibular gland removal- should I do it?

Hi, I am scheduled to have my left submandibular gland removed as I have a large stone that is stuck in the gland. I have had recurrent stones and infection on this left side. Just this week, for the first time I have developed stones and infection on the right side. I have a 2mm, 3mm and a 2mm stone on the right. The surgeon says I have the option of having BOTH glands removed. Does anyone have experience with this? Why am I forming so many stones?

I have only experienced removal of my right submandibular gland ,due to stones and bad infection i dont think you have any option but to get them both removed as they are both infected and have stones and it will only get worse over time.It is not an easy decision for you but you have to think of it long term .Have you asked the surgeon about complications such as having a dry mouth after surgery,I hope some one who has had bilateral removal gets in touch with you best wishes.

I had stones develop on both sides as well. No idea why that was. Every so often one or other would flare up and it would be extremely painful until the stone popped out. The left side was worse so it was decided to take that gland out. I was told I wouldn't miss it as there are plenty of others all producing saliva.

When I got checked out a few weeks after the operation it was discovered that the right one was necrotic ( dead ) so I now have none.

With both gone you will get thirsty a lot more with regular really dry mouth. You'll need to carry some water around with you.
