Bitter taste after surgery for hemifacial spasm

Posted , 2 users are following.

I have had HFS for four years before having the surgery. The surgery completly cured the spasms but I've had a few side effects, hearing lost which I was aware could happen, but others that where not explained to me, high blood presure not easily controlled and my sense of taste has been altered, everything (even water tastes bitter). I been reading about the funtions of the cranial nerves and the facial nerve has to do with all my side effect, does anybody know if this is permanent or will that nerve go back to normal at some point.

Hi Carmen, good to hear that your surgery has stopped the spasms but sorry about these unpleasant side effects.  I've certainly heard of others with an altered sense of taste after the surgery and most have reported that it's eventually gone back to normal.  You might want to join the Facebook Hemifacial Spasm International Support Group - it has over 2000 members and I know these subjects have come up in the group.  I don't think raised blood pressure is a very frequent side effect so this could be something completely different?  All the best to you going forward, Roseann
