Bruises from bug bites - causes and treatment?

Just over 3 weeks ago I was visiting family in Ireland and was bitten by an inscect of some kind, started looking like a mosquito bite but bruised and spread out a good few inches on my lower left calf. As I'd been staying on a farm and walking through woods, I went to the GP and they treated me with a 21-day course of doxycycline just in case it was a tick/potential lyme disease rash. Blood testsfor this came back negative. The rash lasted about a week but faded quickly.

On the weekend I was in English countryside and got bitten again a few times, one time I saw what looked very much like a mosquito on one of the bite locations, so am fairly certain that was what it was. This bite, on my right calf, has now had a similar - if not even more severe reaction, with a large purple/red bruise around the bite. Another bite on the back of my calf has more minor bruising, and then one above my knee has had no reaction.

What could have caused this reaction? Is it something I should get checked out? How can it be treated? Any advice/ideas would be much appreciated, thank you 😃
