    Hi Glenys,

I'm not a doctor, but I can tell you that my Mom has Lupus, I have Sjogren's, and RA, and now they think I too have Lupus, and they think my Mom has Sjogren's...this is not a surprise, as we were told eventually, if you have one, you can get the other. And 2 of my cousins have MS.  There is a lot of Auto Immune issues going on in my famly!!  So maybe not the actual disease itself, but the auto immune issue for sure!  Holy cow!  I've never written it down like this...what a mess the women in our family are in!!  eek

Hi Deidra, Isn't it the truth. My mom has been diagnosed with SS, RH, and Fibro even though hasn't been considered autoimmune disease. One sister Diagnosed with SS and fibro. My other sister diagnosed with RH and Fibro. My niece has been diagnosed with SS, fibro, Raynauds and suffers from symptoms that her Rheumy can't figure out as of yet. I have been diagnosed with SS,Raynauds, Lupus, Fibro. All of the women in our family have some sort of autoimmune illness the suffer from. We are also a mess.

Hi glenys50697, Yes it can. Like any of the autoimmune diseases there are. My Mother has Sjogrens Syndrome and I do also. My youngest sister also has Sjogrens.

    God bless,

If not directly hereditary, then definitely family linkings. My Mum had SS - but i was diagnosed at 27 and she not until she was 70. She had an entirely different set os symptoms to me. You would not have guessed we had the same syndrome.

Thanks Jennifer... Will have chat with my daughter and suggest she get tested for syndrome.. As far as I am aware she hasn't any symptoms.. I at the moment am suffering with my hands.. They keep swelling and joints very painful... I also suffer with dry eyes and mouth...

Glenys, I can understand your concern for your daughter, but am not sure she needs to be tested prior to any symptoms. So long as you both keep in the back of your minds the possibility of SS developing at some stage (and it may not ever, or until she is 70) I would allow her to live without fear and anxiety. I hope your symtoms improve soon.

      Hi Jennifer,

My Mom didn't have Lupus until she was 79, and she was so healthy all of her life!  So strange to get something like this at her age, and all of a sudden.  I have had "some sort" of auto immune issue since I was in my late teens.  They just never knew "what" it was.  I'm 61 now, and was finally diagnosed about, well I guess it's actually been almost 5 years ago now.  I think I said 3 years ago earlier, but my hubby corrected me.  LOL

    Hi Glenys,

I'm sure it is, but in the form of many autoimune diseases. I was told by a Specialist that there is a gene which can make your immune system prone to 'misbehaving'. My family on both sides is plagued with autoimune disease, but as far as I know I'm the only one with Sjogrens. My paternal grandma had Rheumatoid Arthritis from her 20's, my dad has fibromyalgia and Reynauds. My mum had thyroid disease as did her Aunty, cousins and two of her cousins sons. My mum's cousin had Lupus from her 20's.

I worry for my children now, but they are all in their 30's and mine didn't start until around 40. They are all full of allergies, but who isn't nowadays?

As you can see, I do believe there is a gene involved but it can make the immune system cause a variety of diseases, must depend on other factors which disease develops, and maybe if there is no trigger some people with the gene don't suffer.

Hi janet20769, You are so correct. Not everyone will develop that certain disease just because it is hereditary doesn't necessarily mean that person will always get it. I believe that there has just been a gene discovery in SS. But not a guarantee. I am going to double check that for sure. There has been so much more research studies recently. I will get back to you guys as soon as I locate that info. It's kind of late where I am so may not be till tomorrow.

      God bless you,

      Kristy k

So how were people diagnosed with the blood test or rheumotologist - do they tell you if the ana or is it ena is positive blood test had one no response

For me it was good clinical diagnosis - unusual symptoms an a number of possible causes were ruled out until an astue doctor thought it might be SS and so blood tests were done. But like SS itself, each will present differently so the approach to diagnosis will be different.

It is normally found through a Reumatologist.

For me it was my Rheumatologist.  He did a paper type test in my eyes, blood work, and I had the lip biopsy, but also certain issues with my joints over and above my RA, and skin issues.  He had suspected it prior to the tests though, as I also started having issues with my organs as well, and that is an on-going issue.  And I can’t take one of the main meds used to at least slow, or manage it, called  Plaquenil as in the first 3 months it had already caused damage to my eyes, and had to stop taking it immediately.  Once it causes damage, it can not be reversed.  Now my Rheumatologist is going to try Imuran for both my RA, and the rest of my auto immune issues, as the Methotrexate did not work on me at all.  I also take Prednisone, which helps with the discomfort in the bones, but does not slow, or stop the progression of any of it.  There are Auto Immune issues in my family, My Mom has Lupus, and now Sjogren's as well, and two of my cousins have MS.  And 2 of my Aunties had RA.
