Possible double vision(diplopia), what do I do?

Hi,

I am 14 years of age. For as long as I can remember, I have seen what appear to be "ghost images". I have looked up pictures of ghost images, and they do appear to be what I see. I haven't told anyone about this. I go to an eye doctor every few months, who hasn't diagnosed it yet, so it is possible that everyone sees this, but I highly doubt it. I have also suffered from this for a long time, so should I hope that it turns out to be nothing, or talk to my doctor? For any future reference, it does not get any better or worse at the edges. I do not normally tilt my head to the side. If I cover one eye, it goes away. I can control it at will, but if I relax, it comes back. Please tell me if this is normal, or if I should talk to my eye doctor.

I vaguely remember having a similar thing when I was your age.... but mine was the reverse in that I could control it and bring on the double vision, but when I relaxed it went away.

It was a kind of forced squinting.

Does it impede your school work or any other part of your life?

You must definitely talk to your eye doctor about this. That's what he's for. It most probably can be corrected.

Why, you've even got a name for it, so is that the result of looking it up online or who named it diplopia?

I will, thanks. It doesn't affect my work or any part of my life in any way, it's just kind of there.

Yes, I would definitely see an eye doctor about it.  It will help to know what exactly you are dealing with.  Good luck!

Sounds like a small strabismus (squint) have you seen an Orthoptist?

The only eye doctor I ever see is my optometrist annually.

Yeah it may be worth asking your gp or optom for a referral to see an Orthoptist as they specialise in squints and will be able to do a few simple tests to check for that.
